Jrue Randall Holiday, is an American professional basketball player currently playing for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is a two-time NBA All-Star and six-time NBA All-Defensive Team member. He played NCAA basketball for one season with the UCLA Bruins before being selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the 2009 NBA draft with the 17th overall pick. Holiday played four seasons with Philadelphia before being traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in 2013. In 2020, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks and won his first NBA championship with the team in 2021. He also won a gold medal with the 2020 U.S. Olympic team.
Holiday was born on June 12, 1990 to Shawn and Toya, in Chatsworth, California. His parents, Shawn and Toya Holiday, both played college basketball at Arizona State. Toya was named Pac-10 Player of the Year in 1982. He has three siblings: two brothers Justin Holiday, Aaron Holiday, and a SISTER Lauren Holiday. Justin and Aaron are also professional basketball players in the NBA. Holiday’s cousins are Jessica, Jenna, Jade, Jaelyn and James.
Holiday is married to Lauren Cheney, a retired American professional soccer player. They first met at UCLA in 2008. The NBA point guard Jrue first met former U.S. soccer star Lauren when they were both student-athletes at UCLA in 2008. They met at a UCLA women's basketball game during his only season at the school and began dating after Holiday was drafted by the 76ers. They later began hosting annual combo basketball and soccer clinics at UCLA. Following her time at UCLA, Lauren went on to play club soccer with the Pali Blues, Boston Breakers and FC Kansas City before joining the U.S. women’s national soccer team. The team won gold at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, the 2012 London Summer Olympics and the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. In 2014, Lauren was named U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year. Jrue and Lauren were married in Malibu, California. The pair married in 2013 and have two children together, a daughter named Jrue Tyler born on September 2016, and a son named Hendrix born in late 2020. Since their days as college athletes, Jrue and Lauren have been a source of support for each other. In a 2021 New York Times profile, Jrue said that not only does his wife cheer him on, but she also offers constructive criticism when he needs it. In September 2016, Holiday took indefinite leave from the Pelicans to care for his wife after she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. FORTUNATELY, Lauren had a SUCCESSFUL brain surgery the following month. Holiday is a devout Christian and has stated that his faith plays a significant role in his life and career.
Holiday attended Campbell Hall School in Los Angeles, California. After high school, he went on to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Holiday played High School basketball At Campbell Hall School. In his senior year, he led his side to win the California Division IV state title while recording an average of 11.2 rebounds, 25.9 points, and 6.9 assists, 4.8 steals per game. The team went 31 to 5 and won the California Division IV state title. Holiday was rated the No. 1 point guard and the No. 2 overall prospect in the Class of 2008 by Rivals.com. He was named the 2008 Gatorade National Player of the Year and a Parade first-team All-American. Holiday also played in the McDonald's All-American Game, tallying 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Off the court, Holiday was a member of Campbell Hall's gospel choir, the percussion section leader in the school's orchestra, and the manager of the school's girls' tennis team
Holiday played College basketball for one season at UCLA. In 2008 to 2009, Holiday played alongside fellow future NBA player Darren Collison in the backcourt at UCLA. In his freshman season, he played in 35 games as a starter and recorded an average of 3.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 8.5 points and 1.6 steals in 27.1 minutes per game. He earned Pac-10 All-Freshman Team honors. Holiday scored a career-high 20 points on a perfect 8-of-8 shooting in just 19 minutes of play against Florida International. He had 13 points and six assists in UCLA's one-point win over Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the NCAA tournament. After the season, Holiday declared for the NBA draft, forgoing his final three years of college eligibility.
