I hit a problem using JS8Call with my Elecraft KX3 via a SignaLink USB adapter. My standard configuration caused some sort of race condition that results in the KX3 being stuck in transmit (TX) mode. The solution is simple. Here's how to solve the problem.

Hi Paul, I've sent off some emails to Elecraft blog site about the set up problems I am encountering with just getting JS8Call to recognize my KX3. Downloaded Version 2.2.0, entered my call sign and grid coordinates, and used the drop down menu to select the KX3 which I assume has the proper configuration selections. I have a two year old Lenovo Windows 11 computer with 10th Gen i7 processors etc, and I would think should have the sound card already in it, or am I wrong? I do have a KX3 configured/wired Signalink, should I even need that with a modern laptop? I now understand that even at 40 and the 80 meter frequencies, JS8call uses the USB, not the LSB or data modes, for transmission and receive but that still does not keep me from getting "hamlib timed out, do you want to reconfigure?" messages. I can get test transmit bar to go green, but the vertical signal strength bar on the lower left nor the transmit light on the KX3 activate when I try to send a CQ or HB message. So obviously the KX3 and JS8cCall are not communicating. Any idea what gives? I recently tried to start up with my radios for the first time even though I got my license 11 years ago! I am essentially a newbee. Right now, my Dx is severely limited by both antenna ( compromised @30 degree non co -linear Buckmaster 7 band OCFD in inverted V 60 feet high with end sloped down to @30 feet although still with SNR of 1.38 at 40 meters (7.078) and power restrictions 100W which is more than plenty for JS8Call. I have the KX3-PX3-KPA100 all lined up according to the manuals and run the USB cable from the RS232 3.5mm plug on the KPA100 to the computer via a USB cable (the USB plug has both green and red lights which indicate activity when I plug it in to the computer.) In my noobee onpion, it would appear that Winlink and JS8Call are the core essentials of all SDRs. I'm surprised that radio manufacturers don't have dedicated web sites showing step wise how to connect and configure their radios to these programs on the computer. But any pointers that you could give would be greatly appreciated. Cheers and 73s Karl AF5LQ

Hi Karl, Sorry for the late reply. Despite the coding work I'm doing, I'm not a JS8Call expert - far from it. You would be better off posting something to the JS8Call mailing list or Facebook group. The only thing I can suggest is to pay close attention to the Audio settings in JS8Call. These often trip me up and I think give me Hamlib errors.
