Today is Wednesday, May 29, a.k.a. NBA Draft Early Entry Withdrawal Deadline Day. The deadline is set for 11:59pm ET and there are still multiple big names on the board that need to make a decision, but JT Toppin has already he announced he is returning to college. He won’t, however, be headed back to New Mexico. Instead, the rising sophomore will join Grant McCasland’s Texas Tech Red Raiders. KJ Simpson (Colorado) and Jonathan Mogbo (San Francisco) are both staying in the draft. Villanova finally got some good news in the form of leading scorer Eric Dixon deciding to return for a sixth year of college. The same goes for Wes Miller and Cincinnati who get Aziz Bandaogo back. Leif Thulin joins Isaac Schade to share a draft profile on Reed Sheppard.

Toppin will play the 4 and the 5 depending on the scouting report each game. Texas Tech also brought in 6'11 Federiko from Pitt and they retained 6'8 Yalaho who shined as a young freshman last season. Hunter Dickenson (the dirtiest player in all of MBB) is absolutely zero problem for Tech. Texas Tech beat the living hell out of Kansas last season (79-50) while being extremely undersized and banged up.

JT Toppin is walking into a very good situation. Grant McCasland is well known for his development and getting players to buy in on his scheme. There is also an outstanding staff surrounding McCasland at Texas Tech. And that's not even mentioning Toppin will be playing in the best league in the nation. It's also worth mentioning Toppin will be practicing in a state of the art basketball facility and then performing in front of 15,000+ rowdy Red Raider fans, which he did not have at New Mexico. Everyone here at Tech is expecting Toppin to be a one and done. Texas Tech is now up to the 8th ranked recruiting class while also returning Chance McMillian, Darrion Williams, and Kerwin Walton. If Toppin can come close to replicating what he did last season, this Texas Tech team is at minimum an elite 8 team. Then I would bet Toppin is a possible lottery pick. McCasland got burnt on lack of size and depth last season. Then once you pile on all the injuries... it is shocking they finished 3rd in the Big 12 and made the NCAA tournament. This portal cycle Tech made it clear they are looking for size and depth, which they got. It's going to be a fun season in Lubbock. Guns up!
