I ordered a similar airbrush on Amazon a few days ago and it's arriving today. I have a lot of acrylic paint and was planning to buy some alcohol ink (don't have the money right now for it). This video helped a lot because, now, all I have to do is go get a big bottle of alcohol for under $3 and just mix it with the paints I already have!!!!! 🎉🥳🥳 The pluses are that: - don't have to spend $10-$20 on alcohol ink - can stretch out my paints to last longer -- do more airbrush projects, and - because of the addition of alcohol to my acrylic paints, the paint will dry much faster I'm totally winning. THANKS! 🤗

I used these same paints for a long time. You need to mix thinner, thin, stir, and strain for good measure.. I got by using them and had ok results but was always getting tip dry and the occasional clog. I have Createx colors and thinner but I was trying to be thrifty and use cheap paint. Cheap paint can be used and it can work pretty well... But the other day I started using the Createx paint. What a difference! The flow and response of the brush changed dramatically. Even in my cheap $30 brush I had way better control and spray. The paint would flow as soon as I started to pull the trigger back. The brush would make tiny spots and fine lines instantly and every time. I was so used to fighting with trying to get the paint to flow I was doing very little actual painting. Not to mention the on and off, sometimes it flows sometimes not, and not being able to spray the same way twice was wasting all my time. Those cheap paints have a place I suppose.. If you need to fill a sky with blue or a ship with grey and you have a big cup gun you can spray it well. But to thin it to get it to spray detail and cover without blowing spiders all over is a challenge. It just might be worth it to put a few dollars worth of paint in your gun instead of wasting time for minimal results. Also the shading was horrible and the finish was dusty and gritty to touch. I sprayed a pic on glossy poster board (with Createx paint) yesterday and the paint lays so flat and clean it has a perfect glossy finish you cant even feel or see. Its amazing how smooth and clean it looks. Like day and night as they say..
@QuiniansBudgetCrafts
@QuiniansBudgetCrafts 2 года назад
yeah it's not optimal to be sure. Actually it's quite literally the cheapest way possible short of blowing the paint through a straw lol It does do well enough to base coat and such though. This vids a little old, I've switched over to actual airbrush thinner mostly because it was cheaper but also better results. Windex never worked for me. I've since gotten some slightly better brushes with a compressor and mostly use Vallejo airbrush paints for the air brush and use the 50 cent stuff for base coating with a hair brush. That brush I do still use a lot cause it's just easier to deal with and operates at a pretty low pressure so it still has its uses

I am a bit nervous. I painted a pour painting, and want to put a waterslide. But the painting is rather dark. Since I have a little airgun I thought I could just put some white or light pink and just spray a thin transparent layer where my waterslide will go. So thank you for teaching me how to mix the paint! I think I will make a paper cutout just a bit bigger than my waterslide and put that down so I won't overspray. Otherwise, it's just paint and I can do it over. :) thank you!!
@QuiniansBudgetCrafts

if you want to go super easy on how quickly you apply it I'd suggest some real airgun paint like Vallejo model air (not sponsored lol) and thin it a bit. Over spray card for sure, these cheapy sprayers spray in a circle and it's easy to go outside where you meant to unless you're trying to blend edges

Alcohol reacts with some cheap craft paints and it will gum up your airbrush something terrible. Ask me how I know... It was "Folk Art color shift" paint that I was using and it does not work with alcohol. I now use distilled water with a couple of drops of vegetable glycerin or the paint manufacturer's recommended thinner. Before using any mixture, I would test it before trying to spray it through your airbrush.

not really it just effects how quickly the mix dries. As long as the paint has been thinned to the point it's nearly watery you should be fine. The main point of the alcohol is to break down any of the "boogers" that acrylic paint tends to get, and to make it dry faster than just straight water

the cheap paints are water based so it'll prolly wash out. You could try doing a test strip of paint and then bake it on with a heat gun or something to basically stain the material but I think it'd still come out pretty faded. Walmart does sell fabric paints but I think they're super goopy and thick. Another option might be to use for liquid fabric dye like Rit or one of those that are already water thin

When airbrushing with these acrylic paints and alcohol does it require ventilation? I am in a nursing home and would love to try this method of painting. I would need to make a paint booth out of a box to eliminate overspray and I was worried about the fumes from the alcohol.
@QuiniansBudgetCrafts

I think they stink more than anything, but in a nursing home that might be bad. I had mentioned to someone else on this thread that airbrush thinner does work better and now a days is actually cheaper than alcohol lol
@WHJeffB
@WHJeffB 2 года назад
Alcohol based thinners should most definitely be used with a paint booth or good ventilation. I'd think this would be very important in a shared space environment like a nursing home, if not against the rules. One thing I've seen apartment dwellers do (modeling friends that lived in apartments), is to disconnect the clothes drier hose from the vent to the outside. Then rig the vent hose from the paint booth to it for spraying with the paint booth. If you have a window that opens to the outside in your room, you could fashion an insert from heavy cardboard to connect the booth vent hose to and vent it outside that way. Good luck... Hope you find a solution that works!

for base coating, washes, and some shading yeah but the tip it comes with is a pretty wide cone. I think it would accept other tips though. The main draw back is the battery life isn't super long so you're not gonna be doing any 24 hour marathon sessions with it, and the air pressure is always the same so you can't turn that down for super fine up close things. I use mine for terrain mostly so it works fine for me, but if you're looking for one for mini painting you might check out Miniac's channel. He knows WAY more about that than I do.

I don't have much luck with Isopropyl Alcohol for some acrylics. Obviously works with cheap craft acrylics though. But if you want a near universal "acrylic thinner"... Windshield washer fluid is fantastic! Super cheap, readily available. I use the stuff that's good to -20° or -30°, which guarantees that it has a good amount of alcohol (methyl I think). Thins just about every acrylic paint I've used really well. It's a great airbrush cleaner too. Only thing about it... The alcohol is fairly toxic to breath and you don't want to soak your skin with it for long periods of time (this is sort of the case with most alcohols, not just the stuff in windshield washer fluid). So either use it outside or with a paint/spray booth. I also use a respirator when spraying, and throw away rubber gloves (Harbor Freight).

Acrylic paint is sold as non-toxic, but I'm not sure how it'd do for body painting, and the alcohol would for sure be bad for skin and lungs if you spray that much. it's a really cheap one as far as the ones with a compressor go. The single brushes can be cheaper but then you'd need a compressor

It's actually cheaper. You don't get as much power or versatility in a portable airbrush like this, imo, but if its enough for your needs, it makes up for it in convenience and price. Which is about $50 on Amazon.

I'm not sure because I'm not familiar with that paint. The only fabric paint I've worked with has been very very thick and textured so if it's like that I don't think so. The space for the paint to come out around the needle is very small, the slightly bit of grit would clog it. Could be worth a shot though, worst case you just undo a couple nuts and clear it out

I actually just tried this and i couldnt get any paint flow. I checked for clogs, fiddled with pressure, but at no point could i get air out. and when i went to clean the paint that had been in the pot was chunky, so guessing it had already started hardening by the time i was ready to paint?
@QuiniansBudgetCrafts
@QuiniansBudgetCrafts 2 года назад
it may have, alcohol evaporates really fast. Airbrush thinner in now cheaper than ISO so I'd probably swap to that if I were you. Also could be how thinned you got it. Needs to be like skim milk, and you must thin before you put it in the brush cause you'll never get all the boogers from around the needle otherwise
