We take pest control seriously in NZ. Possums and rats are a huge risk to all our native bird life. Cool to see you trying the trap out, they are usually installed in boxes with very small openings and a length of travel before the trap so they are pretty safe really as pets can't get caught/set them off

Especially ones that use other rodents to take advantage of their social nature. 2) That spring is way overpowered; be careful. 3) The locking mechanism on your wooden crate needs a small redesign. I have a wild Norway rat, like these wild ones. Had him since he was 2 weeks old, he was on deaths door, very lethargic. He is an absolute amazing pet. Very social and loving. I did have a pet rat as his brother (bought after I had him for a month) and he unfortunately passed away already though they were close in age. My wild one was vetted and both were neutered. Behavior is a bit different than the domestic one. Also oddly enough, he is cleaner, has designated areas for defecating, whereas the domestic one didn't. But still, knows who his 'mother' is and as I said loving. Did not watch the kill trap part obviously. Nope.

The best part is making the wild rat sit next to a dead one that was just trying to socialize with it for the whole night hahahah

That looks like a pretty effective trapping system! I hope you post an update to let us know how many nasty brown rats you get with it.

Awesome evolution of tactic! Shawn have you considered an Artificial Ground Layer trap to catch Rats over an extend period? A system of traps to exploit their burrowing?

I don't live where there's rats (as far as I know) but I thoroughly enjoy your videos. The only thing I'm apprehensive about for immediate-kill traps is if the species is native.

I think something like a Conibear 110 would work in that enclosure too. Not very expensive and easy to find. Thanks for your entertaining and informative video sharing! Keep it up..

I like how he names his rat Judas to betray the brown rat. Judas is another word for a traitor, turncoat, Quisling, etc. Especially if friendship is the tool to get you to let your guard down. lol

Shawn, were you worried about the live caught wild rat giving fleas to Judy?

That was my worry! Its a good idea over all but definitely check poor Judy to make sure no nasty fleas jumped onto her!

I imagine that if you treated them with an anti-flea med that it would be effective for a period, say 6 months. Not fool-proof, but it should be enough to keep them from catching(?)
@fieryvale
@fieryvale Год назад
@@mabada20 I would think so. And there's not really any other way the wild rat could communicate diseases, since they're in separate chambers.

Awesome thanks for the idea Shawn. I was just about to go get some traps and knowing that I will have better results with a Judas rat is both hilarious and helpful. If you happen to notice this comment, where would you recommend procuring such a live catch trap as you have shown here and what brand is it? Others are welcome to answer too, I would appreciate being able to pick up some traps in person here in the states (FL) or at least somewhere other than amazon. Thanks!

Pretty sure you've traumatized Judas...He's gunna have little rodent PSTD for the remainder of his rat years. Endless squeeky little therapy sessions where he learns to love himself again...He blames himself for the death of his friend who came to help him. The rat life chose HIM, ya know? Not an easy life.
