Trent made one good long pass from right back. He can’t handle the short passes and movement required to dictate the tempo in midfield. At right back you play with you back to the touch line. Only need 180 degrees awareness. In midfield you need 360 degrees of awareness.. he hasn’t got the experience doing this at club level and has lost the ball a lot in midfield cause his touch and awareness wasn’t good enough .. England need a player that can control the tempo of The game.. Trent cannot Do that. Playing a long ball once in a game isn’t enough. He also doesn’t have the physicality to press in the Center. He was often overpowered or arriving a few steps too late the the press. Adam Wharton would be a much better candidate and he would give more balance to the midfield. Would help with receiving the ball from the CB and would allow rice to not have to stay as the 6. Rice plays as a 8 for Arsenal and he is better pressing further up and using his dynamic energy. With Trent there he cannot leave the 6 position. With Wharton he can.
💯. I also think Bellingham inadvertently vacating his position to help the team doesn't help in the long run. Yes change with Foden but don't be going bk to play as a 6 to help out. Hold your position. It reminds me of how Gerrard used to want to do everything and be everywhere. England are effective playing attack at tempo. They cannot seem to be effective without being at high energy. That's ironic when you consider they physically tired second half and then lost control completely. So what are we saying unless we are at 100 aggression and high tempo we are ineffective? It seems that way. We need to learn to how to play with intelligence instead of the premiership way.
Why cant the other players show the same drive and commitment as Bellingham. Foden doesnt fit into this set up. Gordon wouid have been a better option imo.
Agree Foden should be the bench for Bellingham as an attacking midfielder playmaker as he does the same thing as bellingham does in the centre and since he was suppose to cover the left as a winger he was poor since it isn't something he naturally does Same with trent in the midfield was absolutely awful he lost the ball in the heart of the team position as the 8 he also isn't as defensively sound to be in right back Kane was also very much out of the game with also no service terrible hame plan
Disagree - Kane doesn't fit!! Foden should be dazzling as per, up front - for 65mins, then swap with sub Kane, who can manage about 25mins (Bored with the Kane move - getting infront of player, then going down to win a foul - younger players move ball forwards, not hold game up)
@@colinb9148 Kane got no service , and Foden was one of those supposed to provide it, but was anonymous. Kane is a proven goalscorer for England. Foden hasn't lived up to the hype .
@@kimbirch1202 True, Kane in this match was like a carbon copy of the friendlies watkins played in, he played instructed as just a striker up front to finish and it means to be given support from the wingers and the playmaker (cam) from the chemistry and how the formation works there was no link up with foden to kane it was very poor and thus he couldn't finish as the sole purpose of a striker is to be given a ball on the plate and eat it up and finish it which kane has proven to do time and time again like watkins also does, kane usually scores for england by playing in deep which proves the underlying problem with england is there's a very poor link up front and that needs to change otherwise whoever plays up front has to play as a false 9 as out current formation completely makes whoever striker invisible all game. I believe Foden does what palmer does and bellingham does and would need a formation change to have him start but with our current formation means he should be benched, if we play a 4-2-2-2 maybe foden would play but a 4-2-3-1 he doesn't work at the start and would be second in line after bellingham as a different playstyle playmaker good for changing game style in that position
@@qianlihu1694 that's cause arsenal's defensive set up is much better than england. when u have players like saliba, gabriel, partey, hybrid cb-full backs like kiwior, tomiyasu and white, u are much more confident in yourself and your team's defensive ability. while in england's team, rice's defensive supports were guehi, stones, walker, taa, bellingham and trippier. stones was just out from an injury, alex arnold can never defend and was out of position, trippier doesn't belong on the left at all. guehi was good and bellingham did pretty good tracking back. rice surely wasn't at his best but his performance was still relatively better than other english players

Southgate doing with Foden, what his predecessors did with Scholes. Playing him out of position just to shoe horn him in. If you must play Bellingham and Foden in the same side… Bellingham has to play 8, he did it for Dortmund and won POTY. He might not be as much as threat in the box, but the midfield will be more robust because everyone would be playing in more natural positions. Foden as a 10, and Trent is NOT a CM. This is why leaving out Grealish was such a stupid move because he plays LW and this Serbia game was a perfect game for him… he’s a ball carrier and would of kept possession.
He was nice about Foden. Again totally inept performance compared to City. Just doesn't fit into this system, unless he changes formation. We better of with a proper wide Left player who provides width and who can drive forward wide like Saka on the right. Trent was okay, still learning that role which is risky in a major tourney.
I acknowledge that Trent is a very good player, but, he is a liability in midfield. He may have very good passing, however, he gives the ball away way too much, and he often doesn’t have the grit and toughness to win it back. I was also so confused why Southgate would play Trent in midfield when he has Eze, Palmer, Gallagher, and Mainoo who are probably better suited to that position. Not to say that he cannot ever play in that position, but if he wants to be a midfielder, he needs to officially start playing there at club level so that he can properly get used to what the role requires. Also, England have had very poor chance creation under Southgate. It’s been a consistent trait of his England teams, which leads me to suspect that he is not tactically adept. I believe this is why Foden looked like a headless chicken. The poor lad didn’t know what to do! Almost like he had no clear, defined role. Even Kane, a world class striker, was nullified in this team! If England want to win, they really need to sort themselves out, seeing that Germany, Spain, France, and the Netherlands have squads that are very good at creating chances.
It’s always everyone else’s fault when Foden has an average or poor game. He’s meant to be creating chances for others, just like Saka did in the same system.
@@nathanj109 Fair point. Saka has a clearly defined role in this England squad. He's been playing that same position in this England team for a while now, as well as at club level. So naturally, the transition is seamless. The reason why I think Southgate is the problem is that Foden is exceptional when he plays in midfield at City. Of course, he is playing under arguably the best coach in world football at club level. However, he almost never has an exceptional game in midfield for England. So logically, I think Southgate is the problem, not Foden.

@@backspace5199 after seeing Bellinghams performance in the 10 tonight, there’s no dropping him from that position. I get your point, but Foden has played in that left wing position a number of times for City. I remember him scoring a hatrick against United in the left wing position. Fair enough it’s not as often as Saka plays as a RWF. I agree Saka is much more settled in that position, but Foden needs to do better. I hope that when Luke Shaw is back he can create the width on the left so Foden can cut in more, only then do I think we will see the best of him. Southgate’s hands are tied though because we don’t currently have a natural left back at the minute, that’s why I think Fodens game is struggling.
