My neighbor, a Kia Executive, said the affected cars had no built-in theft immobilizers, and were the low end models missing other higher end features, in an effort to produce a very inexpensive car to sell to the masses. They tried to make an affordable car, but the thieves won again. Sad.

Just to clairify, its only If you had your car stolen, or personal belongings stolen, not every single owner. Also if you paid out of pocket for upgrading anti theft measures, then you were also eligible to have that reimbursed.

No lawyers involved. Good job by judge to pay directly to owners. But it is still not enough to resolve security on KIA, Hyundai

What makes you think there were no lawyers involved? There were most definitely lawyers involved and they will be getting tens if not a hundred millions dollars in fees.

@@ilyashick3178 The payment is always made to the owners in a class action lawsuit. Probably overseen by some group that is setup. You do not get a class action lawsuit, go to court, and get a settlement without attorneys being involved. I have been part of these class action lawsuits before. If you are part of the class, you have to fill out forms to determine how much you get.

This is great, but really screws over owners that haven't had their cars stolen, their car is still not fixed and if it gets stolen in the future the settlement money's already gone.

So how does this work . I presume your car had to be stolen to recieve compensation and that compensation depends on your loss . Now say insurance reibursed you for a stolen car loss . Do the insurance company get that reibursement ?

They changed it a couple of years ago. So it is no longer a problem on the new cars.

You can’t sue Tesla, when you purchase the car you sign an agreement that you will not be a part of any class action. Any grievance you have to go through arbitration!! Unlike all other car manufactures ( Tesla is a Silicon Valley tech company and is structured very differently) Telsa instead has a very large legal department and No marketing department . To get your car repaired or purchased back under lemon laws you must sign a non disclosure agreement ( gag order) for it to be carried out. This also happens to any bad press or industry regulators Tesla deals with . It also doesn’t have to recall vehicles for safety defects due to this structure. So the fatalities due to broken suspension, locked in cars when thermally running away or killed by fsd and cruise malfunctions are at the owners risk not Tesla the manufacturer . And boy do Tesla wield their legal department and wording in manuals and contracts to great affect in their favour not the consumer . Another reason their sales are falling and out of 22 car manufacturers their 19th on the list for reliability and quality. In Arbitration with Tesla it’s not uncommon for Tesla to be represented by 3 lawyers to the one consumer. Telsa is known to delete and or misplace complaints made to it. That’s if you get through as it’s very difficult

the problem is not theft, but inability to get insurance for the car. Several insurers in the US are refusing to quote for Kia's with this problem. As a result, I can not switch from my existing insurer to another lower-cost insurer due to inability for them to provide for that car, although they may for my other cars in my family. THis is costing my > 1,000 for the 4 cars as I can not easily switch.

Hopefully your insurance continues to cover it and does not cancel your policy when it is time to renew. I have heard of that happening.

No laws have been broken. Some cars are easier to steal than others. The legal system that gives verdicts based on emotion vs what is legal is the downfall of the US legal system. I'm not supporting Hyundia/Kia, It's just that the free market will work this out by insurance rates going up and those cars giving the company a bad reputation, which is deserved. Ever heard of Consumer Reports? Customers could research this prior to purchasing. Not to mention that any owner could make the car hard to steal by adding hundreds of dollars of security if desired vs the manufacturer paying tens of thousands per car and still not addressing the issue. Ambulance chasing lawyers and class action lawsuits are killing America and driving up prices!!!

If I understand, this kinda a rip for Hyundai owners who haven't yet had theft issues. Shouldn't they being doing something for us to solve this issue thru Hyundai or a third party? Am I incorrect?

Korean products are usually cut corners. I had a Samsung phone it broke mysteriously for no reason, just bricked one day. All my other phones - iPhone or China made cheap Android lasted longer than Samsung.

@user-uk8tl3xy9e not just phones, my LG fridge light bulbs burn out all the time. Never had any problems with inglis or even ge brand. Same with washers. All Korean products seem to break down sooner than others in my life experience.

Only all Hyundai and Kia cars from 2011 to 2022, without an immobilizer, and without a Start/Stop button. So only conventional key barrel start, with no immobilizer, this would be about 20% of all cars produced. These would be the cheapest bottom of the range.
