On May 3, a Black Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, lawyer and former NFL football player says he was arrested, dragged into an Allegheny County courtroom in shackles, and given 15 minutes to negotiate a civil lawsuit to regain his freedom.
When Walter Bernard did not comply with the judge's wishes, he was arrested again and forced to appear in court to argue the same civil case on August 9 and, this time, stayed in jail for nearly three weeks.
Bernard has filed a federal lawsuit against Allegheny County Common Pleas Court Judge Philip A. Ignelzi for multiple civil rights violations.
Attorney Walter Bernard spoke with Roland Martin about this disturbing abuse of power and the justice system.

I did judgment collections for almost 9 years. In some states, you can definitely have a debtor arrested but it takes a lot of work/paper pushing. Thing is... If Mr. Bernard was appealing the judgment, legally the plaintiff or courts cannot enforce it until the appeal comes back. It's ridiculous that this even happened and looks like someone had something to prove. I feel there were some FDCPA regulations violated as well. Although, a body attachment being issued is very rare usually only happens if the debtor ticks off the judge due to absolute noncompliance. This whole story is crazy and pray this brother gets justice.

So the landlord has a leasing contract that he gives all his tenants that he, the owner himself, does not abide by? Then he goes to his judge friend, and this judge literally has this tenant arrested while the tenant's case was in an upper court for appeal. This judge belongs in prison. Idaho courts/elected judges help one of the largest hospital networks, (Saint Alphonsus, part of Trunity Healthcare) extort money. If you don't show up for a debtor's exam they issue a contempt of court warrant for your arrest with the bond set equal to the debt. My eldest son had to deal with their attorneys after he was assaulted with a baseball bat by a couple who broke into his home. He has a traumatic brain injury and the assailant was ordered to pay restitution including his hospital bills but the freaks haven't paid anything. The lawyers, judge and victim's advocates gave exactly zero shits about him when he got the summons threatening his arrest. The money, power and white privilege on full display in this mans situation should be investigated by the bar and justice department.

How come this man did not have a lawyer of his own. Something about this case seems fishy. He should file a federal lawsuit against the judge and land lord. This judge should have his license taken away not to practice law again

I knew a Black judge who helped his son beat multiple rape cases & was so corrupt they used his name on Law & Order SVU 😂

The problem with us as black people, is that too many of us see voting as only to elect a President, House of Representative and Senate members.More emphasis need to be placed on voting persons into decision making at the State and county level down Governors ,Mayors ,Judges, Sherifs,Schools Boards etc. Persons who honestly want to see JUSTICE served unbiased.

Judicial abuse and misuse of power; so many civil rights violations; where is the DOJ? This judge needs to be remove from the beach and hold accountable for his misuse of authority; Judicial Complaint needs to be investigate and not be overlooked
