Hi! It's been a while since we did a Cake International video - 2019 was the last one!
Go behind the scenes of what it's like to be a judge, why certain rules are in place and that all important question. What are we looking for?

Some of those cake designs were absolutely incredible! The cake you showed of the young man with all the creepy creatures all twisted around in his hair blew me away. As you said, his eyes were so good they looked real. Also, the one with the several Fairies around the cake. The were perfectly created in my opinion. Then Ozzy and the Stanger Things display. They were so amazing. It must be so hard to judge these pieces. But I can surely see that you know what you are doing.

I was there on Sunday. My 4th year attending. Some awesome pieces. I particularly loved the mouse with the back pack.

This is a first - me sitting down to your video as soon as it goes up, I’m usually way behind!☺Thanks for giving us a bit of an insight to the judging! Some amazing pieces, but I couldn’t get over the Stranger Things collab. As big fans, both me and Maddie were so overwhelmed with it. Quite emotional too, as they got so many things spot on and was set out so well xx

This year was my first time at Cake International, and I was blown away by the cakes! The under 9s category was amazing!!!! I did run out of time though, and didn't get to Crafts or Christmas. Next year I'm booking all 3 days so I have plenty of time to see everything!

Thanks for the link and the excellent insight video Tracey, you judges really do have a weight on your shoulders and work very hard after all the contestants hard work! I haven't entered again since my first time in 2017 (I got silver in small decorative - still have the piece) - not sure I have the courage to enter again - as you mentioned - things have certainly moved on in the last few years and the skills are insane! Wow! What intense concentration Tracey! So much to consider when judging pieces of art that people have literally but sweat and tears into. The show never fails to impress. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it this year, thank you for sharing some amazing pieces. Also a big shout out to the brigadier’s that we’re brave enough to enter! Question: Are contestants able to see piece rules/regulations before they fill out paperwork to enter? I imagine many would run to the hills upon seeing these 😂 #cherrybrigade 🍒

Aww I hope you can make it to one in the future :D haha yes, all the rules are there for you to look at so you can choose what might be the best 'class' to enter for your skills etc.

I am so jealous at the amazement you got to immerse yourself into. The Stranger Things exhibit was incredible. Was that mostly cake? I so appreciate you showing parts of CI and what goes on as I've never been. Thank you for sharing and keep on caking 💜🍒🍒

The exhibits are usually dummies inside as they will be worked on over several weeks and months and are easier to transport, but will be mostly sugar/chocolate on the outside :D x

I have a feeling you might have judged my cake (potentially not- the Polaroid and diary cake) in the illusion category. Was proper chuffed to have got a Silver on my first ever entry to the competition, and the feedback will definitely help in terms of what I need to do next time! Plus the actual confidence to do it again! So if it was you, thank you! :) x

I could have spent so long in the sugar scream exhibition but there was a massive queue behind me. I should have queued up again haha. Can I ask please, how do you know if a cake is made from a dummy or cake etc? Do they write down what it's all made from but only the judges can see that bit? Thank you.

haha it was fab wasn't it! I held up quite a bit lol The class you enter will tell you what's allowed for that section. I.e Wedding cake category - dummies are permitted. The carved cake category - has to be cake. We as judges are allowed to cut the cake categories if need, to make sure they are indeed full cake inside. x
