In this inspiring episode of "F-Stop Collaborate and Listen," we sit down with the acclaimed 2023 International Landscape Photographer of the Year, Tony Hewitt, to uncover the depth and breadth of his philosophy in capturing stunning imagery. Tony addresses the concepts of bias in photography competitions and talks about ways in which photographers can improve their work through honest curation and feedback. Tune in as Tony generously shares insights from his diverse and illustrious career, delves into the often-blurred lines of photographic genres, and offers profound advice for both seasoned and emerging photographers. Host Matt Payne delves into a treasure trove of practical wisdom, the emotional aspects of entering photography competitions, and the thought-provoking discussions on fine art photography, intended impact, and the pursuit of personal style.
*Three Key Takeaways:*
1. *The Art of Impact and Intention:* Tony Hewitt challenges photographers to explore the narrative and story behind their images, pushing them to create photos with strong visual impact while being mindful of their intent and the story they want to convey.
2. *Enriching the Judging Experience:* Tony stresses the significance of constructive feedback in photography competitions, advocating for a respectful approach that benefits photographers of all skill levels by motivating them to continually refine their craft.
3. *Photographic Style - A Personal Language:* A compelling discussion unfolds around the idea of photographic style being akin to a unique language, evolving from one's interpretation and expression of the world. Tony uses this analogy to inspire photographers to develop a distinctive voice through their work.

What a fabulous conversation! Tony, thanks for pulling back the curtain a bit on competitions and offering your insights. My reason for entering competitions is exactly what you outlined: to force a curation of my work, to help me look at it more objectively and critically, and be intentional about what I feel represents my best. It also gives me a goal (accountability, as you said) that provides some structure to my efforts. That's all a win right there! As part of due diligence, I also look at past winners and try to consider what the judges saw in their images. I have had success with being a "nominee," or getting an honorable mention, and a few times to the RAW review stage. I try to hold it all lightly, just seeing it as information, whether there's a "congratulations!" email or not. There's a lot more to comment on and express gratitude for in this conversation, but I'll leave it at a big overall THANK YOU. Thanks, Matt, for bringing this information to us, and for leading the NLPA with integrity and excellence!
