thank you. You seem calm and relaxed which is lovely. I got my paints ready whilst I was watching so I am going to start now.

It's like practicing a new song. Hard at first but after a week your brain makes connections. Theres a clip on RU-vid I saw once that showed the actual growth or connection that takes place in your brain when you learn.

It's exactly like that. All learning is physical change in the brain, I try to keep that in mind when I teach.

I wonderful exercise. tried making both a digital as well as a physical scale. The digital was easier, I found. One helped the other.

If Titanium White is a Munsell Value ~9.5, what Munsell Value is Ivory Black? I remember Graydon Parrish saying Holbein's Peach Black is a Munsell Value 0.5 ; is that right?

Yes blacks are mostly about 0.5

Yes I do. The best thing is to sign up at my blog at www.learning-to-see.co.uk and you'll get email notifications of new webinars. I usually try for one a month (but don't always manage it!)

Hi Paul. According to what you know and the information you have from Munsell, what is the best way to darken a hue on a value scale, in general? Is it with black (e.g. Ivory black?), the complimentary or neutral greys? I'm going to construct a green/grey Verdaccio value scale to use as reference for an underpainting. I haven't chosen the exact green/grey hue or chroma yet but I'll be doing it with a limited palette of Langridge oils: Payne's Grey as my blue black, Red Oxide, Gold Oxide and Titanium White (my alternative Zorn palette). If I mix the low chroma green/grey and then start adding Payne's Grey into the mix it will start leaning towards blue, not a darker green/grey. Should I neutralise the Payne's Grey with an orange/brown mixture first? Cheers

I think we need to clarify exactly what it is you want to do first Scotty, I'm not completely clear - are you talking about lowering hte value (getting darker) or lowering the chroma (getting less intense, toward grey)? Generally speaking, if you want to lower chroma you use a lower chroma colour of a similar hue. If had a green, I wouldmix ivory black (a blue) with raw umber (a yellow orange) to get a very low chroma green. Bring that to the right value with titanium white, then mix it in. Compliment mixing will usually mean pretty uncontrolable swings in hue. If you want fine-grained control, that's not the way to go.

@@PaulFoxton Hi Paul thanks a lot for your reply. I was referring to decreasing and increasing the value, not the chroma, as the hue I want to mix is a greenish grey to use as a Verdaccio underpainting. I would like to construct a value scale so I know my darkest darks, lightest lights and all the steps inbetween. I think I'll follow your steps to construct a neutral grey scale first, and then mix a small amount of the low chroma green into each 'puddle' and see what happens 😉
