Today's interview is with the contemporary American stained glass artist JUDITH SCHAECHTER. Judith is a celebrated Philadelphia-based artist known for her fabulous glass work which explores the human condition through allegorical proxy figures both male and female. Her pieces play with visual language, using Gothic art mixed with the grotesque beauty of Hieronymus Bosch, underground Comics and the hallucinogenic patterns of a fevered dream. Her work is represented in over a dozen museums including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Art and Design, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Toledo Museum of Art, and in major exhibitions around the world.

Another great interview! I liked seeing the images of her work first before the interview began. (I have seen quite a few before this) This may be a good format going forward for all. I'm also in the middle of watching her instructional videos. I had wondered if the protagonist was her also, and now we know the real answer as well as the insight to why nude figures. Another artist added to the list of "Must take a class from this person".

Derek, I dabble in stained glass in Wheeling, WV, USA, and recently stumbled across your video series on RU-vid. Thank you for highlighting the various artists. The spectrum of creative expression in glass is immense. In the several videos watched, including your own, I have been exposed to more ideas than I'll ever be able to explore. Thanks for your work.

That’s really great to hear Matt, thank you for taking the time to send me your comments. I put these interviews out there to show the wonderful creativity of modern glass artists. 🙂

Judith's creativity and artistry are wonderful to behold. One gets lost in her brilliant imagery and the emotional impact of her work. Not unlike listening to a very good orchestra play a masterpiece of music--she takes you to places you have never been or imagined. Which is the whole point of art! I never tire of seeing her work; it feeds an important part of me. Thank you for making this film.

I have watched Judith on RU-vid many times. She has such a wit and humor about the processes. Her work is very different and strange too. Thank you sooooo much for sharing this interview and thank you too for your videos!!

Wow! Thanks for this, I hadn't come across this artist's work before, and I am wildly impressed. I enjoyed the discussion on the thought behind these visually stunning and beautifully made 'autonomous panels'. I've been looking at Judith's website to see more; her blog makes interesting reading too. Good to hear a vote for the value of all art beyond Fine Art painting too. Craft-based work doesn't have to be second-rate.
