From a Heifetz Rubato "Alumni Showcase" from July 2020, Heifetz alum, Artist in Residence and Avery Fisher Career Grant winner Zlatomir Fung introduces and then performs three movements from British composer Judith Weir's solo suite titled "Unlocked," based on southern US folk songs collected by Alan Lomax.
From the Birmingham (England) Post & Mail: "I've always been interested that a significant proportion of the songs were collected from prisoners - mostly Black prisoners in southern jails," she says. "The piece is made up of five cello 'fantasias' inspired by five of the songs."
"One song comes from the Bahamas, another describes a teenage boy's fantasy of having the prison keys in his hand, while the last is a transcription and arrangement of a blues song from Alabama."
