The road from white belt to black belt is long and challenging, and few students actually complete the journey. Here is a video of my student, the youngest in the history of my dojo, testing for his black belt in the international martial art and sport of Judo!

This is a FORMAL test. All techniques shown here are performed in ideal conditions by design and are intentionally static. This IS NOT the complete test, as this video represents only a tiny sampling. Check out our other video for more info on a full black belt test: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--s0nxHXa3cU.html

This is interesting, when I got my Black Belt every grading was Randori only. My first grading I had 8 fights and won 5...on paper I should have jumped to Blue belt. However they said it was too high so I had to be a green belt. I was so pleased. I trained really hard for 4 months, went to another grading. I had 3 fights and lost all...sadly no new belt. This was in 1998, eventually I did get to brown belt, however, then to gain a black belt you had to get 100 points in your Judo Licence. Points were only gained by winning fights. No win No points! I had friends who took years to get 100 points as you had to wait 3 months between gradings! It was very hard and took me long time. One friend had 95 points, went to a grading, he only won one fight with a Waza're so left the grading with 98 points! It seemed much a harder back then as there was no formal test to get your Dan grade.

Shiai, not randori, was a huge factor in him qualifying for this test. He had been playing Judo over seven years, and during that time, we won gold at nearly even regional and state tournament. He also competed in Nationals (Scholastics, Junior Olympics, Dallas Invitational, President’s Cup, etc) many times, and he won many golds in huge divisions. So, by the time he took this test, he had won dozens of gold medals in actual competition. I expect my black belts to to be good, knowledgeable, and have the ability to teach what they know. So this test was a formal demonstration of his knowledge. He had already proven himself on the mat many times before this.

I'm curious to know if this test was done inside your dojo and judged by yourself ? How does the exam work in your country ? In mine, there's a national exam organized twice a year where all aspirants comes and do pretty much the same, but in front of professional judges from the national federation.

Great question! I’ve conducted many black belt tests over the years, and each one has been different. I take a student’s health, age, accomplishments, time-in-grade, length of training, contribution to the art, etc. into account when deciding on test content. In the case of this specific test, my student had been training consistently 2-3 days a week for six years, had won numerous state and national titles in competition, and had been an ikkyu (first degree brown belt) for over a year. His test consisted of Nage No Kata, a random sampling of throws, chokes, pins, and armbars from the curriculum, and he had to give full technical demonstration and instruction on one of the sets from the Gokyo No Waza. He performed admirably, making him the youngest Judo student I’ve ever had to earn a black belt.

It does look easy, and going slow is much easier than going fast in ways. You have to think super quick as to what you can use in a fraction of a second and then be prepared to change based on what your opponent does by changing their stance. Also in a street fight, not everyone will be matched to your size and ability. Joint locks and throws work well when someone is near your size, but not when they're 30kg more than you. I recall having to use what I learned twice in my life, and both fights ended very quickly. It's especially bad for others when you encorporate BJJ into it because then joint locks can turn into broken bones and dislocations, and much worse, very fast. Especially if you let emotions take over. I don't feel the need to go above a black belt either.

@@the-gd9rv But it will. And if you have to fight 1000 guys on the street the problem is you. It's extremely unlikely to fight someone on the street with Judo experience, let alone someone with a blackbelt. The other guy calls them unknown combatants, yet they use the same techniques. It makes way more sense to train in other disciplines rather than going to tournaments if self-defense is your goal. I mean you can do both but not many have the time for that and in those cases it's better to train something else additionally.

In Canada everyone has to wear a white gi at a grading and name n info go to national org before we can grade. The grading is then done by a provincial grading board not the club... its quite possible the club coach is not part of the grading. New policy is that the student if highly competitive can skip the kata portion as they are to focus on being competitive not eating up time learning the kata... othee than attending one kata session prior to the grading.

Most national associations now have 2 grading paths once you get to 1st Kyu: 1) The _Batsugun_ method which requires line ups/ a certain number of competitive wins to get a black belt and subsequent Dan ranks. 2) A more theoretical pathway which takes far longer. Once you get to 1st Kyu, you can wait for usually about 5 years then do a theoretical based Dan exam, which is more theory heavy but still has some randori rounds. But winning is not necessary and randori happens once on the grading day. Should you pass and wish to use this method again, you then have to wait another 5 years to apply for your next Dan grade. The 1st method is obviously quicker for most people, but it is a lot tougher physically and tbh it suits naturally competive/stronger/athletic Judoka more. Second method takes less of a physical toll and suits recreational Judoka or Judoka who are more interested in Judo as an art more than a sport, but obviously it requires a lot more patience. Like it would take you a decade after you get 1st kyu to get to Nidan with this method. A lot of people would not have the patience for that.

*Armlock techniques How is a bent armlock (ude garami shoulder lock) an armbar?
@senseiinthewild3241
@senseiinthewild3241 3 года назад
In Judo, Armbars can only be done against the elbow (not shoulder or wrist). The concept is to hyper-extend the elbow, which means to bend beyond normal motion in any direction. Bent arm ude garami is a very effective way to do this.
@yakovdavidovich7943
@yakovdavidovich7943 3 года назад
Two thoughts -- (1) for some reason, I've heard a lot of judokas use the term "armbar" for arm locks other than a hyperextended elbow, whereas BJJ and other arts tend to be more precise about it; and (2) the intent is to attack the elbow in ude garami, though it's clear in practice that the tap often comes from discomfort in the shoulder. If you know of any grappling art that is perfectly consistent in its terms, ruleset, and logic, let me know :-).

@vittocrazi

yes. blackbelt is first degree. You start from 6th kyu (white belt) to 1st Kyu (brown) Then start from first dan upwards (theorically up to 10, but there are very, very few of them) Blackbelt is just a visual signal for "first dan or higher", aka, not a beginner. its usually called "degree". but the correct term would be "dan".

BJJ is not as formal as Judo though. Unless you are in a gym franchise heavily associated with the IBJJF (like Gracie Barra) you can get black belts and further stripes whenever. Brazilian culture is way more relaxed than Japanese culture about this stuff. I have known a BJJ black belt to go from white belt to 2nd degree BB in 9 years.

But you have your fights on top of that away from the club, at least you do in the IJF UK. You need 100 points, each fight is 20 points. You have to win by minimum of submission, hold down, perfect throw, in other words an ippon. 5 brown belts who didn't get their Dan grade on the day face you, bow and four walk off. You fight one, if you win by anything other than an ippon it doesn't count, and the game is over, if you win by ippon within the 5 mins you get 1min rest, then the other brown belt comes on, each win has to be defeated with ippon to get your grade on the day, hence 100 points, if you fail to defeat even the fifth brown belt with ippon, even if you win, the game is over. After that you have to reach now 200 points and u cannot fight within three months. You then become as the other brown belts who faced you in three months time, you cannot fight for your Dan grade on the day, u only get one chance. So then every fight you have from then on is against a brown belt trying to get his black belt, each win by ippon for you is then 20 points, they go toward your 200 and any fights you won by ippon on the day you took your black belt, also goes toward you 200 points. It's a great system imo and that's on top of what you see in this video which is your theory. What the system does is level out most fighters somewhere along the line, for example, if your a natural bruiser with ok tech,and you got your black belt on the day and fairly quickly, you will get held back for your second Dan if you have fighters who failed there's on the day and took longer but cos of the extra experience, gained better technique and they will defeat you later on because of that. This is a broad brush explanation from when I was in the system 20 yrs ago. And every individual is different, some train much harder than others, some have a natural flair etc etc, BUT, I have a friend that's a great fighter but his nerve goes in crowds and with spectators, his club judo is beautiful but he's been doing judo for 20 plus yrs and still hasn't got his Dan grade, his bottle goes on the day cos we don't fight in our own club for gradings, we have to go away to sport centres where the bleachers are full, a bit like fighting in a stadium at the Olympics with three mats out.

As mentioned you also need to remember before a theory grading like this, most Judo BB tests also require a certain number of wins vs other Judoka in competitive matches, which is unique in martial arts. Not even BJJ has this. Yes BJJ has comps and that's a big part of it, but it does not have a formal requirement to win X number of matches before promotion the way Judo does.
