I've not come across that throw is it a fairly recent one? I haven't practised Judo for many years and need to get back into it again to protect myself. An excellent demonstration, thank you.

No, it's a very famous one. I think the reason why is because it's no longer legal in IJF rules.

Nice technique. From a ground game perspective, I'm having trouble understand your final landing position with your downed opponent access to your back like that? That's very dangerous.

Judo players will finish landing on people like that, but that's mainly to have a higher chance of an ippon. You can finish it crouched, but upright, holding the arm for an armbar

So the second one doesnt count as a violation?

Wow, judo rules have gotten so out of sense as to now prohibit grabbing below the belt?! Ridiculous. Great video, though, thanks.

+phoenixamaranth Well, it certainly detracts from the martial arts aspect of it, but I do believe it adds to the spectator sporting aspect, which is heavily emphasized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). As a pure martial art, judo would be able to maintain its roots, but it would not be as widely practiced as it is today, the level of athletes would not be that high, and the pace of technical innovation would not be that fast. As an Olympic sport, it loses some of its martial arts roots, but in return it is loved by people all over the world, it attracts some of the best athletes in the world, and the techniques evolve every year. IJF rules are not made in a vacuum by ignorant bureaucrats following the whims of the IOC. They are created in consultation with coaches, athletes, and referees who love judo and have a deep understanding of the sport. I don't agree with all the rules, but I do feel as a whole the IJF has done a good job of creating an environment that rewards risk-taking and aggression, and discourages passivity and stalling. They certainly are better at rule-making than FILA was (the governing body for freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling). The ban on leg grabs is particularly controversial, but without it the lighter weight categories were becoming unbearable to watch due to passivity. Lightweight judo is supposed to be fast-paced and filled with explosive action, but people were becoming afraid to take risk and initiate a throw because it is so easy for a 60kg person to counter with a pickup technique (lightweights have a higher strength-to-body-weight ratio than middleweights and heavyweights, so muscling through a less-than-perfect pickup is easier for them). Many matches were boring affairs where no one wanted to pull the trigger. I personally hope they remove the ban eventually, but even I must admit that the lighter weight categories have become more exciting.

i mean also leg locks are banned , i think the reason is injuries.

I think this might be more self defense.

Leg grabs are now illegal but the throws as demonstrated here are perfectly ok!

The second version is permitted under the 2017 rules. I would have liked it if he made it clear that he was going to address the problem with the leg grab rule for kata guruma earlier in the video.

Done this throw quite a lot in Karate. Quite a useful throw for shorter people. I must say doing it while gripping both arms seemed hilariously far-fetched. I don't watch much judo, precisely because of the silly "no touching below the waist" rules, however I wonder how often that type of fireman's throw actually happens in judo?

Yeah good luck getting your opponents arm through his legs for that throw sounds dangerous.. all these different rules now..
