Angelo came to visit my judo class, back in the early 70's once, at the invitation of our instructor, Brian Davis, from the Budokwai. Before he got changed, Angelo was asked by our green belt holder, "Have you done judo before ?" "Just a little", he replied: then he emerged from the changing room wearing a black belt. He was built like a barn door and none of us could get him off balance ! Nice guy too !
Angelo was an athlete extraordinaire, superb Judoka and probably one of the most skilled heavy weight Judo players of all time. I would have given everything I've ever had to have stood on the same tatami as this man.
I did for about one minute (may have been less) in the late 60s at the Budokwai (when Tony Reay) was manager. He had great strength, agility and in common with some other big judoka (eg Keith Remfry) moved like a cat. The term "phenomenon" truly applies to this gentleman.
Dislike the great Angelo Parisi described as a beast, even if a compliment. His technique & skill was unbelievable. Similar to his coach Tony Sweeney but with even more power,. Inspiring to see a Heavyweight with his movement throwing opponents cleanly for Ippon, both right and left( rare skill) in contest & randori. My regret was not being one of the ten at the Budokwai due to illness. Dream judo at its best. Warm regards Andy,
