Judy Collins was born in Seattle, Washington on May 1st, 1939. She is a Grammy Award-winning American singer and songwriter with a career spanning over 60 years. She is known for her eclectic tastes in the material she records (which has included folk music, show tunes, pop music, rock and roll and standards) for her social activism, and for the clarity of her voice. Collins has released 28 studio albums, 4 live albums, numerous compilation albums and 4 holiday albums. Today, May 1st, 2021, she is celebrating her 82nd birthday.
Judy Collins is great and had great musicians and arrangements. Yes there was no auto tune - But this was lip synched as was extremely common on American tv shows then. You can hear the echo also.
@@livegun5572 *_I know..._* right...?! Sometimes, I wish that I grew up in the 1960's; as it had better music than even in the 1990's in many cases - let alone in the past 20 years. 😞
A masterpiece. I always loved the Byrds’ version, but Wikipedia informed me of Judy’s, so I came here. This is so perfect. I’m choked up listening to this knowing where we were then and where we were going. It’s good to remember that our country has been through some tough challenges. We have the ability to endure the challenges of our own time. Who are the voices of today?
I'm one of them, yet am still trying to break through. Long story to this, but going back to Judy; yes, i'd never heard this before either until now and had the same reaction. I'm so much in agreement with your feelings and words. But unfortunately, the bad apples permeate the entire carts in my country, the USA, and also abroad. Just a few with matches can burn it all down! I know i'm mixing metaphors, but i just have to say that the book from where the lyrics are derived? If only more could read and heed the insight and compassion of the writer (some say Solomon, others have other opinions) shown within those 12 chapters. The world would be "woke", actually! Being alert and sensitive is always better than out-of-touch slumber.
@@geoffreysonnen3482 It’s from the Old Testament. Pete Seeger's song "Turn! Turn! Turn!" takes all but one of its lines from the Book of Ecclesiastes chapter 3. I love how you mixed the metaphors so appropriately.
Sissel. say no more look her up she's all over YT but sings mostly before a live audience... Her along with Judith Durham have absolutely no peers when it comes to beautiful female singers. Yeah look up Judith as well on YT don't take my word for it. However although Sissel sings in 15 different languages Judith only sings in English.
MusicMadMaurice I did not pick up any statement from him that he wants to promote the antics of the Democrat party. He is referring to the time positive won over the negative, as opposed to todays, over-the top- nonstop-gnashing-of teeth and chronic diaper rash symptoms of contemporaries of ones that lecture those that were actually living at that moment, even though they, ( the gnashers) did not.
MusicMadMaurice The song is verses from the Bible. It’s not about Jim Crow- caused by the Democrat party that fought for slavery. Then Killed Abraham, when he was going to send every person back to the jungles of Africa that wanted to go back and be enslaved, again. Those that wanted to stay and were Citizens Were doing well if they weren’ harassed and murdered by the democrat kkk. So as I read, you took his comments on how Judy’s singing of Bible passages, and voice quality had been lost in today’s world. You interpreted it in hussein rhetoric. Most of what comes out of many younger people today is our country was bad. And you know it for sure, because you didn’t live a day in it. None of us would be here, if it wasn’t for those that came and shaped or protected our nation, before us. Just saying. So as I recall, you introduced Violence into what he was saying were better Times where People respected each other. Especially when they followed teachings of Jesus, and God given, singing talent., By the way, Judy is Canadian. Not sure on Canada’s Lynching history.. maybe you forget, your original, ‘Lynching and Segregation,’ Statement. I simply replied on that with a history lesson. Not bizarre at all.
I saw her at Guildford (UK) last month. Her voice is still astonishing (especially for an 80 year old). And her stories are almost as good as the music.
At that time, people was listening silently, religiously until the end of the song. Today, they yel, they whissle, make noice and they cannot ear a single word of the songs. What a pity !
people had respect and were tought good manners in those days , many people in the last 30 years, seriously failed to do a good job as a parent , its evident in the kids and teenagers nowadays. Did anybody happen to mention TO THESE KIDS how rude it is to engage into something else while someone is talking to you ? Im referring to addressing the phone while in a conversation .
That was a BBC studio audience. They would have had to book tickets and you didn't always get them for the show you wanted, but these were free. The system always seemed to work and the audiences always gave the performer a fair chance, but these days most BBC shows are made by outside firms with their own policies and so on. The BBC is one of those institutions which is most definitely NOT as it was in the sixties, or even the eighties. The allegations made against the BBC's Martin Bashir by Earl Spencer (no relation to me) almost defy belief, but although they seem to be worse than anyone could have imagined, I'm sorry to say I am inclined to believe Earl Spencer. If anyone has single-handedly killed the BBC, it is Martin Bashir. Tonight in Person was one of the BBC's treasures and we are not going to see its like again, because I doubt that the BBC can survive the coming scandal.
Profound. Every time she sang this, she sang it differently. She had a few bad days, back in the sex, drugs, and rock and roll era, but you almost always thought "that's the best it can be done." On this particular occasion, she went beyond that. This is better than it can be done. This is beyond perfection, and I don't think she even planned it.
Her voice soars up and carries me back to 1966 and all the dreams and ideals we had then.....it was a good time to be alive....the music was fabulous and so was the fashion....I was still ignorant of much of the evil, racism, etc., in so much of the world, so I was happily idealistic. Wish we could turn time back.....
@@mebeasensei We were, and we protested against that, with no success, the same way we protested our entry to the Vietnam War (some of the great music then was based on that).....but over all we felt that we could stop any more wars...I said we were idealistic....life taught me different....I still grieve for the way the poor guys who were drafted, and went through hell, were treated when they returned home....it was so not their fault, but in our hippy ignorance we judged them for going...(I did say I was idealistic then)....not these days...the world is a much worse place than anyone could have anticipated now, partly because a lot of the free living hippies (or their kids) back then became jaded, conservative, and materialistic in the worst possible way....for this reason I can't help feeling cynical about some of the virtue signalling cause carriers today....sad....turn, turn, turn....maybe we will get back there...
This lady has one of the finest voices ever to have come out of the 60's folk revival and this song is one of her finest. The Bible certainly can produce some of the best lyrics
RE: Bible certainly can produce some of the best lyrics And the worst. There really is no time for war. And if there were a god who set such a time for humans such god would be evil and despiseable. But... Perhaps I am too pessimist, How about a song from Deuteronomy. We will call it, "So The LORD Will Rejoice Over You To ......" ****************************************************************************** 28:62 And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou wouldest not obey the voice of the LORD thy God. 28:63 And it shall come to pass, that as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to nought; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest to possess it. 28:64 And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone. 28:65 And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: 28:66 And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life:
Hang on in there. The master who created heaven and earth, and who breathed the stars into space knows every hair on your head, and has a plan and purpose for your life. Shalom
Wonderful lyrics! I dedicate this to my dearest, dearest Mother who sadly passed away two weeks ago and I miss her more than one can ever imagine! To my darling beloved Mother. You were truly the best ever Mother and you were wonderful too! Thank you. All my love!
I truly fully know the feeling Carla. I lost my Mother Xmas. We were closer than close.Strong memories and homage to her grave side helps. Say hi frm a Londoner
These words mean so much now in 2019 as they did in the 60s. Its one of the 1960's quintessential songs that defined my life. I am grateful that I became if age in the 60s.
I’ve always liked her version best. On another tack, I wonder how many of those young men in the audience wound up in Vietnam and how many didn’t come home? 😢
Chad Quick, "... how many of those young men in the audience ... didn't come home?" ( 2:03 ) Or did come home a very different person, able to see the words of this song differently than before.
To everything turn, turn, turn There is a season turn, turn, turn And a time to every purpose Under heaven A time to be born, a time to die A time to plant, a time to reap A time to kill, a time to heal A time to laugh, a time to weep To everything turn, turn, turn There is a season turn, turn, turn And a time to every purpose Under heaven A time to buid up A time to break down A time to dance, A time to mourn A time to cast away stones A time to gather stones together To everything turn, turn, turn There is a season turn, turn, turn And a time to every purpose Under heaven A time of love, a time of hate A time of war, a time of peace A time you may embrace A time to refrain from embracing To everything turn, turn, turn There is a season turn, turn, turn And a time to every purpose Under heaven A time to gain, a time to lose A time to rain, a time of sow A time for love, a time for hate A time for peace I swear it's not too late
When she sings her lips just barely open and such a beautiful sound comes out. Today's artists sing at the top of their lungs with their mouths wide open and nothing much comes out. Judy Collins has such a beautiful voice and she is so elegant.
Well stated its not about the opera belting or wailing its about the feeling overall..... just cause you hit the note that broke glass doesnt mean you are the greatest but in metal it works less so in other lines... in any event the over singers miss the grace of the silence in music so it stands that they lose listeners because they lose the command of dynamics as a factor of music. ie loud soft silent full et al
Lori Drover. We Will Never Forget You, Angel. Rest In Peace. In The Arms Of The Angles...
Beyond beautiful..heavenly...written by Pete Seger ..I saw him him in concert when I was a young teenager, in concert with Woody Guthrie....cementing my love of Folk Music..
If you have family members who have never heard this kind of music, they are in for a treat. She is a voice from the past singing for the new generation. Thank you for allowing me to hear her voice.
I find this not only breathtaking but deeply moving as well. Judy's voice has such a pure tone and clarity and her performance is just perfect. Also, the simple accompaniment adds enormously to the overall effect. I am so glad I lived through those extraordinary times and felt the compassion and love then which is so evident in Judy's voice. For me, this is one of the most beautiful things on RU-vid.
In 1966, I was eleven years old and hearing this song brought hope because we lived in years of Civil Rights and Anti Vietnam War marches, that were always met by violence.
Many people have recorded this song over the years, but I still come back to Judy Collins. For me hers is the definitive performance. Just listen to the expressive light and shade in her voice and see how she extracts the full meaning of the words with the beauty of the melody.
Classic beautifully clear singing, a holy voice, and magical instrumentation. Thankyou the 1960's. A time, when many things that needed to be said were nearly made known. A shame the social revolution and spiritual awakening eventually failed, and did not quite realise it's truest and most beautiful potential. To "overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil" ; and instead find the beauty of grace that comes from above, and to live in it, victoriously. A living ongoing miracle. What it was all about really. The answer to all the wars suffering poverty and inequality that had gone before. Now, look where we are today, in the West ! A disgrace.
How true Darren. Back in those days, we raised voices in song or mostly peaceful protest to affect change...not the BS of today. An old man now, I'll be ready for my exit when the time comes.
@@Robnord1 Rage, rage, against the dying of the light friend. Ascend instead. We don't check out, but are moved on, to greater things. It's interesting, there are going to be some sad people in heaven. Better to go there," having done all, to stand". Gbless.
I will request this song be played during my funeral..I hope Benson Alexander will attend this funeral ..Amen . I really die for the man who hurt me so much financially..
That voice! So beautiful! Have goosebumps! Today anyone and everyone becomes a singer, you don't need a voice! Technology (autotune) has really screwed music! And unfortunately originality is lost somewhere, we are hearing too many remakes( lot of copyright issues out there, stealing the tune to try to make it their own)
Judy recorded her version with Jim McGuinn on guitar. Later, when the Byrds had flopped with their 2nd single "All I Wanna Do", Jim remembered this song and rocked up a bit for the teens.

I met Pete Segger at Woody Guthrie folk festival Okemah Oklahoma. I ask him about this song. He said was from the times from his heart and simple to express.
She is amazing, her voice is like 'Honey' ! Her version of 'Both Sides Now' makes me cry every time. I prefer The Byrds version of this , but this is a great version! dx
It’s all pedagogy. Learning. How does a toddler learn to walk - they fall down, and they get up again. After the process is done, they can walk. There is a time and a purpose for heaven’s economy. Other versions of the song finish with ‘I swear it’s not too late’ xxx
She sings this song as no other singer can. I became aware of her in 1968, and I have not recovered yet. This is the song to be sung when I move on, but only by Judy.
