Judy Garland Stereo - Doll Shop (Extended) - For Me and My Gal - Oh, You Beautiful Doll

So frustrating that this stereo survives but so many other great numbers do not! Lucille Norman opens, George Murphy sings "Oh, You Beautiful Doll" by Nat D. Ayer and A. Seymour Brown (additional lyrics by Roger Edens), and finally Judy sings "Don't Leave Me Daddy" by Joseph M. Verges. You can see the deleted Hula doll at 4:30 at the left.

It’s too bad that more of these commentators were not born in the 40’s. So many of them cannot begin to appreciate Judy Garland’s music and her wonderful films. I don’t think anything produced today comes close to the magic of Judy Garland and by extension, anything MGM put out in the 40’s. I didn’t appreciate them until the 60’s but then I wasn’t born until 42. No one will ever compare with Judy Garland in my book.

@hebneh
@hebneh 6 лет назад
When I saw that this was the "extended version" I was hoping the hula doll footage would be included. No such luck, but at least I can hear the soundtrack. It's obvious that it was there originally since George's rejection of it is present in the lyrics that remain: "Those yacka-hicki hula dolls are really much too faddy..."

Another INCREDIBLE job Mark! And quite a lengthy clip too at almost 5 WHOLE minutes to synchronize! But as always, expertly done. I only wish Warner Home Video would do the same with "For Me And My Gal". Thanks so much for your hard work. Did this one take long to do? And did you encounter any problems? What ALWAYS astounds me is just HOW MUCH material Metro Goldwyn Mayer used to cut out! The whole bit with the Hawaiian girl is edited out, but we seem to see a quick flash of her seated on the soundstage floor at 04:30 into the video. Oh wow I WISH you would do the whole of the "Atchison Topeka" number [but I realize that is a tall order LOL]. Cheers David.

@boinx1234 7 лет назад
This was tough, as some parts of it were alternate takes (e.g. Lucille's entire opening). Also, always hard to add the taps! All that work for a meh number. You've seen my clip of "For Me and My Gal", right? I've done Atchison, but haven't uploaded it. It's also available in stereo as an extra on the DVD!

As a woman - seems like the only one in this thread - that really this whole depiction of women is sexist. And let's be clear: Garland's roll as the Doll here is steeped in the heteropatriarchal tradition in America. That being said, women in hollywood have to be the utter image of perfection and if they aren't, well they get cast out. Garland certainly was the epitome of that as she had to have fake teeth early in her career and was put on drugs to get thinner. So, tell me again how that isn't rooted in sexism and the heteropatriarchal tradition of hollywood?
@henzsol6771
@henzsol6771 4 года назад
Well, I'm a woman too, so I guess I'll leave my two cents. Calling him Daddy and Papa, with clear sexual overtones, is what bothers me the most. CREEPY AS FK!!! And no, they didn't see it differently in the 40s. Sex abuse, molestation, and incest was alive and well back then. This was around the same time the Kinsey report was published. The level of sexual and physical abuse against women and children in Hollywood was unreal. What bothers me second is the equating of living female human beings to mechanically animated objects.

June Allyson once said that Judy couldn't do anything differently in her life just because her talent was so overwhelming and she didn't know it. That is why Judy didn't care about financial management and the state of her bank account at all... the rest is history.

@desertrehabpt211
@desertrehabpt211 4 года назад
She was too busy working just to make enough money to eat for her and her children. She thought she had reliable people taking care of her finances. Put yourself in her place. You didn’t begin to understand Miss Allyson’s meaning. Not only that, she was a child and by the time she was a woman, she was ill. She had to work all the time. She couldn’t take the time needed to get well. Doctors begged MGM to give her the time but she was a very important and lucrative piece of property. Her talent was overwhelming for her and greedy grabbing money making leeches who surrounded her including a certain husband were spending her money faster than she could make it including the IRS because some one of those people paid to over look her affairs were not doing their job and I’m sure pocketing whatever they could get their grubby little paws on.

@@mikeos1 God, I love "Internet Experts"! Stereo experiments began in the early 1930s. Beginning in the mid-30s, all MGM pre-recordings were done in multichannel sound. These "stems" were later mixed down to mono for the film's release. Fortunately, many of these original stems survived, and literally hundreds of them have been released in true stereo since the 1990s. You might consider not pontificating on things of which you have zero knowledge.
