Start a toe up sock with Judy's Magic Cast On and a wedge toe. Go to • Judy's Magic Cast On -... for my updated 2016 version in HD with clearer video and audio, plus NEW tips!
I just started a knitting class on making socks and our instructor is teaching this method. She directed us to this video. We spent 2 hours in class trying to get this right and I've only had to watch the video twice to get it. Once you learn the technique it is fantastic! Thank you for posting this video!
Absolutely the best, most fool-proof tutorial for this technique! I tried several other videos and many written descriptions and I just couldn't figure it out until I saw yours! Thank you so much!
Great tutorial. Thanks so much. I'm a novice knitter working on a cover for my kindle. Your instructions were so very clear for Judy's Magic Cast-On. Also, not having worked in the round before, I appreciated that you took the tutorial through 2 full rounds. I'll be back for more lessons!
Absolutely fantastic tutorial. Thank you! I am an experienced knitter who needed to add this to her bag of tricks and your video was perfectly paced and so clear.
Wicked awesome! I have been a bit shy of trying toe ups, as I didn't understand the written instructions for this cast on, and had no one near to ask. Hooray, I GET IT!!! THANK YOU!!!
This is the clearest example I've seen for Judy's Magic Cast On!! Thank you so very much!! you explained it clearly, slowly, and with no glare on the needles!!
I am about to attempt my first pair of toe up socks using magic loop. I only know one way to cast on and this video is very clear on what to do. I can't wait to try a new way to cast on and to do two socks at a time!
Love this vid-explained well, and slow enough for a beginner knitter to understand. I wish they would all put that extra effort into it. Thanks a million.
happiness is a visual explanation of what I read and re read --TYTYTY I also had not used circs to do socks as of yet. so it was interesting to see the beginning and how it worked.
Wow, what a wonderful tutorial, I am looking forward to knitting socks as my next project, I practiced another technique but this makes more sense, no seam, this also does the magic loop in the direction I'm used to. Thank you!
This is an awesome tutorial! Thank you so much for posting it. I kept dropping a stitch, somewhere, when following the written instructions... This made it so simple! You are a great teacher.
Thanks for your clear and concise instructions for Judy's Magic Cast On and a wedge toe! I was pulling my hair out trying to understand my pattern directions. Luckily I found your video (and subscribed to your channel) and it looks like I may be able to finally start knitting my first pair of socks!!!
really helpful video. The camera did a nice job of close ups and the knitter did the stitches nice and slow with an excellent verbal explanation. I will definitely watch the other videos as well, after I have practiced the above...Well done!
This is easily the most frustrating and agonizing thing I have ever done in knitting. Your video is amazing, however. Casting on the stitches, with your mantra in mind, becomes simple and fun. Knitting the first needle, however...there are not enough obscenities in the world to describe it. I must be casting on too tightly, because I often lose the stitches trying to knit them, leading me to just start over and over and over again until it's right. Thank you for the video, however, as it DOES help!!
You are ssn excellent teacher. I've listened to other videos on this mco, but yours is so very clear. Thank you for taking the time to post your teaching videos.
Thank you for taking time to explain this so well. I have a book on toe up socks 2 at a time with good illustrations, but seeing the cast on in video makes all the difference. Thanks again *:)
I have a bit of trouble at 3:25. I twist my yarn but as I begin to work the other row, this end piece doesn't want to stay. I try to work around it, but that side has a long loopy gap I can't seem to close. Other than that trouble I'm having this is an EXCELLENT video!! Thank you for your kind help and easy explanations! :)
Small holes are created with a kfb. If you find that yours are too large, try a make one in its place after the first stitch and before the last stitch on each needle.
Thank you for this video very good for me to re-learn my skill as I wanted an seamless bottom up for something other than sock this was great many thanks
@dankimforde You could absolutely use this method for two hats. For European (continental style) knitting, the only difference is that you will hold your working yarn in your left hand - everything else is the same.
@dedel43 Absolutely. The easiest way to do this is to knit a portion of one toe and then place it on a holder. Start the 2nd toe to the same point and then put both socks on the one needle.
@dwink1993 Try tightening the stitch after the kfb - it is this stitch that tightens up the kfb. You could use a make one instead of the kfb. Try my Make One video. Hope this helps!
@pinkpianogal1 You can absolutely do 2 at a time. I will be filming a video on this soon. I knit all my socks using the magic loop technique with one long circular needle.
THANK YOU INDEED FOR THIS AND OTHER VIDEOS TOO!!!! ITS AWESOME BEING ABLE TO WATCH IT OVER & OVER AGAIN TILL ONE GETS IT (plus no need to bother ANYONE!!! :-))
@dankimforde -for eastern european knitting, (different from continental western knitting) it would be the opposite- CO as directed, then knit the first stitches through the front loop. Then when you get to the 2nd half of the round (where the narrrator says to knit through the back loop to prevent twisted stitches) you will just knit as you are (and I) are used to, SImply always knit into the 'open leg' of the stitch and you will be fine. ANd so on, only the first rnd will be like that.
Very good video. I was able to catch on much faster than Judy's video. Is this video similar to a closed toe cast on? I'm trying to knit my first pair of socks, toe up. I have never made a pair of cuff down either.
Wow ! I never thought I was going to get it until now! Thanks I might be able to knit some socks after all, ok well I'm going to give it a try! Do you have any sock making videos?
So just to be clear: if using this technique to cast on for toe-up socks, you're doing a sort of "backwards" version of magic loop for the entire sock (pulling the front needle long instead of the back needle)?
I love all your videos! Do you have or think you'd be willing to do a tutorial on dpns? :D I have a project I'm working on and then I want to start my first pair of toe up, but I prefer knitting socks on dpns. :)
This video will get you started. Find a simple pattern and use my videos as a guide. After the foot, watch my Short Row Heel video. After completing the leg, watch Sewn Bind Off video to finish the sock. Happy knitting!
Help. I love this video and it is very helpful. I have started successfully many times. However, my sides are very "holey" I cannot figure out why. I knit continental and I am tightening up as I go. Is it possible I am mixing up something and just cannot see it? I am fairly new knitter. Thank you for your video.
@birdbeaty My video shows knitting with one long circular needle called the magic loop. You are knitting in the round and it is the slickest technique ever! Follow along with the video and trust in the method - it really works magic! Please let me know if you need any help!
@birdbeaty This video shows a cast on for toe up socks and is a bit different from the usual knitting in the round. It sounds as if you have been doing it correctly. You can watch my "Join in the Round" video to double check yourself. I definitely think it is time for you to try your hand at socks!
I have a silly question; when you start knitting that first stitch, at 4:12 after putting 5 stitches on each needle, is the yarn pulled around & through to make the stitch the working yarn or the tail yarn... ? :)
me too! i cast on and then knit one row and then i cannot make the needles face the correct way to knit the second row. i've watched a variety of videos and cannot pinpoint what i'm screwing up
Hi. Thanks for the great tutorial. Do you ever have problems getting holes when using knit front back? Is M1 possible to use here on first and last stitches? Thanks
@TheKnitcat I love toe up socks! Check out my website knitpurlhunter for info on my new knit along. It features toe up socks and more. Skacel is sponsoring the KAL with fab prizes and it is FREE!
