The protagonist, Yuji Itadori, starts as a strong high school student and member of the Occult Research club. His motivation to join the club was to have more time to visit his dying grandfather in the hospital. After his grandfather's passing, Yuji encounters Megumi Fushiguro, a Jujutsu sorcerer searching for a dangerous object. This object turns out to be one of the twenty fingers of an evil sorcerer named Sukuna, sealed inside a box at Yuji's school.
Yuji confesses to having given the cursed object to his friends, putting their lives at risk. Megumi explains that unsealing the finger attracts cursed spirits that could endanger Yuji's friends. In a rush to the school, they encounter various curses, showcasing Megumi's cursed technique, the 10 shadows. However, they face a formidable curse that overwhelms them, leading Yuji to make a drastic decision - swallowing Sukuna's finger.
Satoru Gojo, the most talented Jujutsu sorcerer and Megumi's teacher, arrives on the scene. Gojo possesses the Limitless cursed technique, allowing him to manipulate space. Intrigued by Yuji's ability to suppress Sukuna's soul, Gojo decides to bring Yuji to Jujutsu High, even though regulations dictate that those possessed by cursed objects cannot be allowed to live. The narrative sets the stage for the unfolding events and the challenges that the characters will face in the series.
