What a trio ! I must admit I couldn’t listen this all day, too high level for me. But I enjoyed that good vibes, Julian’s body language is something. We clearly see, hear, that even if I don’t get the whole thing, this music comes direct from his (intellectual) soul and heart. Thanks for these high quality music and filming.

I love the chemistry of this trio. It's great watching Jorge react to what Julian is playing, cracking a smile when he's surprised by something or when it hits his ear just right. They're all just vibing, reacting to each other's virtuosity. There's nothing better than being able to watch musicians of this caliber gel together with such ease and flow!

I think it's a BF Deluxe Reverb - you get a glimpse at the end and see it better in the Saint Rose video (no grill-cloth logo though, so maybe it's a boutique DR clone!)

(Stay with me on this) However it happened, I heard Uehara Hiromi 's "Spiral" and knew I was onto something special. I'm not NEW new to Julian Lage, but I get the same feeling from his (and his bandmates') playing, as I did/do from Hiromi and the various bandmates she has had.

No it isn’t, that serves as a room mic, the bass looks like it’s DI, the guitar is mic'd. The drums are micd properly if you look closely

Interesting comparison. I often wonder who is "better" at guitar, out of the technical virtuosos like Ichika and Tim Henson Vs Jazz and classical masters with better ear for harmony and more interesting long form compositions

Why does every jazz trio have the bass mixed so low? Its kind of unfair tbh. I couldnt make out anything hes playing until the solo

Agree. The sound quality of this whole album is downright mediocre. I got the CD, and it's no better than the YT sound. No soundstage at all. Almost sounds like it was recorded in mono at points. The highs are all severely rolled off, and there's zero punch or bass anywhere. It's all mixed in a dull, muddled midrange. I don't get it. The playing is phenomenal, and his touch/tone are gorgeous. Why does it sound like the engineer is just phoning it in?

It’s an upright bass in a jazz trio. Recorded with 1 mic. It’s an aesthetic choice. A feature, not a bug. If you are used to listening to this kind of music, your ears tune. I can hear the bass just fine, and that’s on iPad speakers 🤷‍♂️

This is going to rile some, and trust me I'm a big fan of his playing, but so much was made about his new Collings and the work they did on the pups, but I don't care for the tone. It sounds sloppy and too gritty.

Wow, I can only guess as to the depths of this vast knowledge, I am in awe! To tell Julian he is out of his league is so commanding, so forthright! Wow! @@chrisheath594 It is funny hey? The negative comparisons... but I too checked out Cecil and though fantastic and at a level I would be lucky to reach, Julian is out there like f%&ckin' Pluto, man! I think it's fantastic we have so many great guitarists to choose from, we're really lucky atm! Plus the current era of pretty decent mid range guitars has helped me snag one that I really love. Cheers

Poor Cecil 😂 I agree with the inspiration, Julian always makes me want to play guitar, Holdsworth though impressive never really grabbed me except with Tony's Lifetime, and Metheny is someone I need to get deeper into. I'm guessing you saw the Beato interview with Pat? Shit, I gotta play some guitar today!
