I am all confused. Who is honestly probably versatile and alive? And who is the band? Touring? On the record? Oh. never mind, I could find a Link Wray Link.
Eric Schultz Danny was actually an incredible jazz improviser as well. There is a video on RU-vid of him playing with a jazz band at a Holiday Inn (just...wow...). Blew my mind as I only knew him as a country picker up until that point.
The Colley Wollesen Trio is amazing, but these guys are going to some different, really original, incredibly exciting places. They have the best chemistry of any band I've heard with Julian.
As a guitar player, I got into into musicians such as Steve Vai, Satriani, Frank/Dweezil Zappa, Steve Morse. Nowadays, these performances are really inspiring to listen to. Julian's playing, in itself, is refreshing to hear. Have to check out more from these guys. So, thanks for this. Great stuff!
I’m completely late to the game, but I just discovered Julian today (what?) and am blown the f away! Where has this music been all my life? Beyond incredible and such a humble guy.
stratmad enjoy my friend. I wish I could discover Julian all over again. Listen to his playing with the Nels Cline 4. Mind blowing as well. There is a YT video of them that defies description.
The freshest air in mainstream jazz we got in years now! It has guts and attitude for a change! Not all that soft hipsterian indie melancholy that found its way into the jazz scene in the last two decades (if we don't count the free scene that kicks as*!! )
am i out of my mind imagining a group where julian lage playes with jacob colier on piano, ari hoenig on drums and mononeon on bass????? is that too much to ask ah yes it is
It's not about you - it's about the music. Just listen and if you don't get it move on so the rest of us can hear and enjoy. It's like seeing an angle - not everyone can see it but it doesn't take away the beauty that we see. Peace!
Saw them in Amsterdam last july. Front row.... could almost touch the drummers artery in his neck. It was a fantastic concert. Man! It really made me very happy....
I think there’s something not quite right about the recording quality. Even the voices sounded crispy. I don’t think the crunch sound that we were hearing was what Julian was hearing. That said this is the most rocking stuff I’ve heard from him. Like the tunes and the playing. Just wish the audio quality was better.
The first song reminded me of some bands I used to like around 2000 like Karate, The Sorts or Euphone. Either way he as a musician is beyond all those bands.
His sound is a lot more saturated/distorted than usual.... is he pushing a preamp of some sort? Its a small space, I doubt the amp is cranked, I have a very similar amp and it gets hella loud to sound like that...
I believe it's a TC Polytune->JHS Morning Glory->Strymon Flint. He's stated in interviews that he prefers plugging straight into his Fender Champs, and only uses the pedals when he needs to simulate overdrive because he can't crank his amp (i.e. the Paste Studio is small).
Sometimes sounds like clean heavy metal. Sometimes sounds like he's just playing every song ever written at the same time. Not always melodic but always interesting. Sometimes confusing.
Wow. Unapologetic rock with no limit on where he can take his playing, the guitar as an instrument, or the song as a whole. Anyone know his new amp setup? Maybe an old Deluxe?
Hey Bruno, thanks for the tip. I did just read an article on his new stuff in Premier Guitar, where he is playing new songs in DC using a '64 Fender Princeton. Either way, this guy sounds amazing. Hi Sean, indeed. The magic amps are a recent addition for touring, I believe. I think Julien will be using a Magic Tweed Deluxe and Vibro Prince (a really good princeton reverb type amp).
He had just gotten the Vibro Prince the night I saw him in Atlanta. It sounded fantastic all night, and afterwards he said he really enjoyed it too. Fantastic amp.
