This particular act sounded very unsteady sounding. I understand that he is a teacher, and is probably nervous playing in front of a broadcast to millions, but one thing's for sure, I believe that this will open up the idea to have more musicians popping up in the American Idol show!
@slushomatic Also "controlling the amplitude manually" doesn't make any sense. There's no other way to control the volume of the sax, other than having the sound guy adjust your gain on the mic you're using - which isn't what we're talking about. I don't believe there was a live band with this, I think he used the same backing track, but I could be wrong. They don't show a live band in the video. I have the sax for 17 years, so I know what I'm talking about. This guy is good - but not amazing.
@slushomatic Thanks for calling me "dummy", but you make a very weak argument. First off there are PLENTY of LIVE recordings available of all of those artists I mentioned so you can hear how they REALLY play. You admit that you've only heard Julian in this controlled environment. But yet you can "almost can garantee you he sounds just as good without all the technology backups as well", huh? Right.... Also playing soft isn't hard on the sax - something a high school freshman can do. (continued)
@nsmadsen ummm and they had back tracking too or does an actual live band not count? umm reverb and EQing were in those artist recordings also dummy. Thing is Julian cant help it that technology gets better. I almost can garantee you he sounds just as good without all the technology backups as well. Sad part is I have never heard him without all the technology backup. Although as soft as he plays in the beginning gives the que of how talented he really is by controlling the amplitude manually.
As a performance - it's great. Honestly! But take away the smoke machines, lighting, reverb and EQ, excellent backing track... and you're left with a very good but not amazing saxophone player. Why do I make a point to say this? Not because I'm a hater but because I think some folks really do lack an understanding of what an amazing saxophone player truly is! Coltrane. Parker. Desmond. Mulligan. Cannonball. Brecker. Marsalis. Rollins. Stitt. Just to name a SMALL few. Google them. Listen.
