I first became obsessed with the Maggie Smith version from The Carol Burnett Show, and I didn't realize for a couple of years that it had originated with Julie! Both are so fun.
3:51 Carol "you're so Pall mall, you're so Benson and Hedges" Julie "I don't smoke!" Carol "and I'm so corn cob pipe" Julie "and you shouldn't either" How can you not LOVE these two!?
You know its funny because I have an American friend and I am very much English. We both love Carol and Julie and we sing this song all the time! Chum this song is dedicated to you lots of love xx
Heavenly! I love the little cry in Carol's voice when she sings, it is what makes her Tarzan so great! Julie is perfection of course! Their genuine friendship is priceless, no egos!
One of the greatest openings to a live (on kinescope and videotape) television special, and a fine time capsule: at the time of this 1962 special Carol and Julie were primarily stage stars; neither had begun their careers in film and television. They're both somewhat new here, emerging on a grand stage in evening gowns, boas and gloves, beginning a 55-year friendship for the world to see.
I laughed out loud within the first few seconds of their performance. So did Julie. Awww... I wish I had been alive when Julie Andrews could sing. She lost her voice the year I was born. Sad... "No, it's troooo, it's troooo!" "I don't smoke... you shouldn't either!"
Believe it or not, this was a summer TV special (not regular season) in 1962. I taped it with my Webcor and later got the LP, which I played to death. Every number is really creative and witty. How funny it is to see Julie Andrews spoofing The Sound of Music in the Swiss Family Pratt number, a role she would later be famous in. The CD was just reissued last year and includes their later 60s special as well.
I rememmber being 12 yrs old, and so in love with Julie Andrews that it hurt. I bought the album of this music for $3.00, and listened to it till it scratched and wore down.
I loved seeing this again after so many years -- I have thought of this song occasionally over the years and I always think of "You're so ... 'Hey Bud, where's the Lady's Room?' and I'm so ... 'May I wash?' " Ha ha! Thanks for posting this!
i love julie and carol! they are wonderful comedians! i especially love the part when julie says: "i would like to appologize from the bottom of my heart for this aporling reach of taste!"
Brings back childhood memories of sitting around the TV for this special. A long-time fave of mine, and it's great to see clips of it on RU-vid so folks who never had the chance to see their work together can witness just how talented both ladies were (are). Carol singing "Meantime" was a show stopper, too. Now I hafta go looking through my old record collection for the LP of this. [lol] I think I may have worn it out from so many listens, memorizing the lyrics and numbers in the show.
You do! You do! I don't, I really don't. Oh I don't know. You're so elegant, so lady-like. You're so London, you're so Kensington Gardens, and I'm so San Antone What's wrong with that? You're so harp strings, you're so chamber ensemble, and I'm so saxophone It's my favourite instrument. You're so kippers, so caviar, and I'm so liverwurst You're so Shakespeare, so Bernard Shaw, and I'm so Fannie Hurst! Fannie who? Fannie? You're so Harpers, you're so Manchester Guardian, and I'm so Daily News You're so white pumps, you're so pink satin slippers, and I'm so army shoes! Wherever you go, you belong Oh Carol, you're wrong, wrong, wrong You're so hi there, you're so put-her-there-partner! and I'm so how d'ya do You're so pogo! You're so Pop-eye, and peanuts, and I'm so Winnie-the-Pooh You're root beer! You're ginger ale! And I'm so lemon squash You're so 'oh, hey bud, where's the ladies room?' and I'm so 'may I wash...?' You're so Mermen, you're so Rosalind Russell, and I'm so Deborah Kerr Oh I love her! You're so 4H! You're so SPCA! And I'm oh, so DAR! Wherever you go, you belong No, you're wrong, wrong, wrong! You're so Pall Mall! You're so Benson & Hedges! I don't smoke! Carol: And I'm so corn-cob pipe... You shouldn't either... D'you know what it's like going through life looking like a corn-cob pipe? Oh, don't be silly! Let me tell you! You're coyote! (howls) You're prairie dog! And I'm so birds and bees You're so dirndls! You're so petticoats! And I'm so PVDs! Face it, Julie, you are HEAVEN! You know what you are? You're christmas! And cotton-candy! And carnivals! Oh? You're a little girl in her first prom dress, tripping down the stairs on her first date with stars in her eyes! Wait a minute. You know what you are? You're hayrides, you're Halloween! And you're firecrackers on the fourth of July! You're a little boy at his first ball game, waving his pennant in the breeze Um... You're our boys overseas! So We'll be partners! We'll be hotdogs and mustard, a twosome, a duet! We'll be buddies! Just like Huntley and Brinkley We're Andrews and Burnett. Wherever we go we belong, we belong, we belong Together!

Yes, 'Oldie', this number was written especially for Carol and Julie to sing on their special by Mike Nichols and Ken Welch (he also collaborated with his wife Mitzie on "special musical material" for Carol's stage and TV appearances over the years; they always got special credit at the end of her variety show).
What a treasure clip of my two favorite entertainers. Such a talent of musical theater. I love it. There is also another version where Carol songs with Maggie Smith in her show.
So we’ll be partners! We’ll be hot dogs and mustard- A twosome, a duet We’ll be buddies just like Huntley and Brinkley We’re Andrews…and Burnett Wherever we go, we belong, we belong: We belong together!
OMG this is pure entertainment. I'm sad that I took them both for granted when I was young. There's nobody alive today that could do what they're doing.
Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall is an American musical comedy television special starring Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett, broadcast on CBS on June 11, 1962.
Carol sang this with Maggie Smith! Hands down this one with Julie Andrews is far better, in all aspects, singing, rendition, & simply fun & that natural flow of grace & humor! Carol & Julie got chemistry!
Well, it doesn't get any better than this! Julie, Carol, Bernadette, Sutton, all of Broadway's leading ladies could beat Nicki Minaj or Rihanna any day.
"No Mozart Tonight" is one of the most entertaining openers I've ever heard. It would be great to hear it extended. Was it written for this special? And "Your So London" is awesome! Very funny.
I fear the technical quality probably wouldn't be acceptable to some stuffed shirt in the broadcasters. (Personally I wouldn't mind that - arguably it even adds to it.)
How fabulous is the pair of them?!? If only my name were Carol...my best friend's name is Julie, and she's more like Julie A., while I'm more like Carol. =3
Carol Burnett was my alto heroine. She could belt out in a chest voice, and never seem to go flat, and if she did, that wonderful, silly putty face of hers covered it up. I would have loved to see these two perform. Both women raised in the tradition of vaudeville. If you haven't read Mrs. Andrew's latest book, "Home", I highly recommend you do so.
I think she is imitating Richard Burton as King Arthur in Camelot here, Julie (1962) was stil playing the role as Queen Guinevere opposite Burton. Actually there is a clip of the original (Camelot) on RU-vid, just type "Ed Sullivan + Camelot".
Unfortunately I don't have the lyrics...But I think a bit of googling will help you;). @ KimLoveJulie: it was taped at Carnegie Hall in New York City. ;)
