Mark Summer played this at my school yesterday and I've listened to it probably twenty times since then. It's one of the most amazing pieces I've ever heard.
I've played cello since I was a kid, and this piece by Mark is by far my favorite cello piece that there is. So many different ways it can be improvised, so much joy, so original. It showcases the incredible diversity of the cello. Bravo to Mr. Laird for a phenomenal performance!!
Played with such gusto, panache and elan, this is a rare performance which brings full life to Mark Summer's creation...outstanding ! Thank you Patrick.
I have returned to your interpretation time and time again over the last decade and I have to say I think this is THE definitive performance of Julie-O! Just exquisite. Bravo!!!
guys, a little respect for an excellent live performance? I mean this is objectively one of the best renditions of this piece out there..... "I like this other guy better" or "sound is dry" is just kind of a dismissal of the whole pursuit. if you feel the burning desire to say that and nothing else, maybe check your motives. Kind of like walking through a Picasso exhibit and stopping at every painting to say "eeh, Mona Lisa was better"
Of course, if someone has an opinion, they need to check if something is wrong with them. They need to “check their motives” Police of thoughts is always here to remind you that freedom of opinion is less important than avoiding triggering people by expressing it. Can’t you just let them like, dislike, say what they feel/think ? How is liking someone else better or finding the sound dry even lacking respect for the performance ? Liking something is not a bad thing. Finding the sound dry is just an observation. Expressing one’s feeling or opinion is far more important than political correctness. Some people will like, some won’t . Someone will like part of it, and not the rest. political correctness and trying to make everyone happy, not expressing what you really feel is killing this world.
I think criticism should be welcome, even on live performances like this. Despite that, I love this performance. He definitely seemed like he had the intent and mood of the piece down. Notes and things were in tune, and it was definitely impressive.
Kevin Olusola's cover of this inspired me to go find out who the original composer of this piece was and I just have to say, this is absolutely awesome
Oh cool guys!!! Love so much ! I was once at your gig when you guys were in Turkmenistan, Turkmenabat. You broke reality at that time . Me and my friend even got to talk to you back then . And now imagine how cool it is when you are running into a video on the internet of the band you saw once in real life somewhere in a small country.

Just a rule of thumb, if it looks like the note is going to ring, stop it from ringing and it'll make that effect, start off kind of ridiculously slowly and work your way up to speed.

Yeh, I don't think this is necessarily 'better'. I just find this version a more atmospheric performance, mostly because of the setting and better acoustics.
don't get me wrong, he's an amazing performer but he seems so intent on making the slap percussion part so fast that his intonation suffers. and the ending! you're supposed to enjoy the last note!
You do realize tone is like 70% acoustics dependent right? He was obviously playing in a venue that had a very dry atmosphere with little resonance. Vice-versa, play in a nice acoustics and everyone thinks you're playing on a goddamn Stradivarius or something.
Not at all. Even the greatest cellists sound like crap on their Stradivarius if you hear them play it outside. And me saying 70% is also based on observing people commenting on RU-vid. People always ask "what instrument you are playing" when the video takes place in fantastic acoustics condition. And people assume you have "bad tone" if the condition is poor. If anything, it could even be more than 70%. A good tone is not difficult to achieve. An amateur can achieve it. What is actually difficult is achieving projection, controlling the dynamics, articulation control, etc.
