This week I'm working on an old friend -- a painting that simply refuses to cooperate with me. But I'm here to tell you, that's okay! It's a natural part of the art process. I encourage you to embrace it, learn from it, and keep moving.

I'd call it a painting, too. I use many different materials - threads, acrylics, oils, textiles, pastels, crayons, charcoal, papers, and on and on - and describe myself as a painter and my pieces as paintings. Sometimes, they only contain paint; sometimes any combination of materials. I prefer describing it this way rather than the all-encompassing, less specific, often over used "mixed media". But, that's me. I have tons of "failures" that I save and rework and rework, and sometimes it works. I like the direction this painting is going.

LOL! There is so much valuable advice here. I think that my sticking point is not the process itself but my expectations of it. I want the process to be linear rather than ‘hunt & peck’! Certainly what you said about creating significant change to work then regretting it is a thing I find frustrating. I will suck it up & keep going. I guess that hearing that my process is almost identical in conception to yours even though the work produced different (I do machine stitched textiles) is reassuring. Maybe I have finally come up against one of the limitations of having no formal art education - I have little wider knowledge of how artists work. I certainly do find that I move between pieces that I find ‘easier’ and can be ‘finished’ & work that moves on a long term track of its own.

When I get stuck, I throw some ink on it, spritz with water, and see what happens! 😅

Selfishly, I wish you would call it a "mixed media" piece rather than a painting. I want the term to get out there and be understood as a thing, so that when I talk about what I do, more people would get it. Because (I think) mixed media work has SO MANY more dimensions to it than just paint.
