i know this song is about julien’s battle with addiction, but when i first heard the lyrics i couldn’t help but be reminded of my own battle with bipolar disorder, and how i sometimes find myself missing the manic episodes because when you’re experiencing them, you don’t realize the toll it has on your life. everything’s out of focus, almost like there’s a kaleidoscopic veil over everything. you know it’s bad for your health but you want it back because it doesn’t feel bad when you’re experiencing it. nothing feels bad.

Phoebe saved my 2020 for a bit, now time for Julien to pick up the slack

i read that this song is about vices and addiction. in the beginning you see two men who look exactly alike fighting against each other in a church, which i think can symbolize a TON of things depending on your faith/religion, but to me it talks a lot about struggling with one's self. fighting yourself. you see a man watching over them. it cuts to julien for a little bit and then you see the old lady all by herself scanning what it looks to be a bible and it feels like she's kind of obsessing over the words and the meanings. it cuts back to the men fighting and by now you probably suspect the two men are simply one. all these people look like they're fighting against the same things: hurt, obsession, lack of faith. julien sings "faith healer, come put your hands on me" and it cuts to the people. the two men have finally stopped fighting... maybe they've finally found peace in their faith or maybe they've begun to make peace with the things they cannot control. it finally ends with "i'll believe you if you make me feel something." it's such a beautiful video, and godddd i love everything about the lyrics.

I love this. To me it feels like it's showing how we're all surrounded by the shells of our purpose and trying to fight who we are to become who we want to be. The struggle of watching your childlike faith crumble into a shard of hope

I don't know what we did to deserve Julien Baker, but I'm sure it wasn't enough.

I love how this video was filmed with social distancing. The only two actors who ever get close to each other are the two brothers (who for all we know, may live together), and it looks like everyone almost always stays well over six feet away from the camera. (There are a couple of suspect moments there, but they could easily have been achieved with a good zoom function, or in one spot, setting up an unmanned camera on the ground.) Julien herself never even enters the scene except through a computer screen (probably so she wouldn't have to create an additional hazard by flying to and from wherever the video was shot), and the man trying to touch her through it is a perfect metaphor for the human connection we're all so desperately missing these days. And somehow everything we see makes sense in context, and fits the themes and the aesthetic of the song. Artistic video production in the time of Covid.

Anyone hear a hint of Frightened Rabbit in this sound? I totally love this direction she’s going!

This new sound is a little bit murkier than I’ve come to expect, lyrics obscured behind crescendos. I think the absence of clarity pairs well with the subject of battling vices. Can’t wait for the new album!

I just heard your music for the 1st time this morning..and it's all I've been listening to ever since. It's impressive how far out on your sleeve you wear your heart for your music..and it's cool that you can be as honest as you are in your lyrics. If only I knew you. I know what it's like to be stuck in the clutches of the darkness, and there are things that I've seen that would cause most people to cringe in fear upon hearing about. Even though your path is probably full of different circumstances..I guarantee you've got nothing that'd cause you to see the backside of me as I ran away. I know what it's like to need somebody around who might possibly be able to understand you..after all..I'm a little older than you and I'm still wishing I could find that person.

So, she's given us a pretty good idea of what the song's about, but can any of you make much sense of the video? The only thing I'm reasonably confident about is the wrestling twins representing a fight with oneself, because it seems like the most evident symbolism in the entire video, has been pointed out by several people, and it's also a recurring theme or image in her lyrics. There must be some significance to what's going on on the screen they knock over (around 0:55), but I'm not sure what we're watching there, anyone? Photocopier lady is anxiously copying the book but then appears calm not much later. I wonder if it's the ritual of the copying itself that is soothing. And whether she's supposed to just be looking at the picture in her hands towards the end, or there is any specific meaning to her turning it over. Polo shirt guy is an enigma. Unless his vice is McDonald's, his distress seems to be caused mostly by being a powerless bystander to the wrestlers/Julien, whom he literally tries to "put his hands on", but to me in a sincere, not a snake oil salesman kind of way. Or maybe he has deep-seated issues his Julien Baker brain rot is preventing him from dealing with, of course. Then there's the smoking thing that looks like an engine on a crane (coinciding with the "smoke alarm" in the lyrics at 1:15). I guess I can sort of see the symbolism there, but there's a good chance I'm completely wrong so yeah, I'm going to pump the brakes right here. The "blood" and the plastic bag or sheet also look like very deliberate inclusions that I can't explain.
