Video interview with American singer-songwriter Julien Baker. FaceCulture spoke with Julien about learning to play guitar, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, vulnerability, her first album Sprained Ankle, not expecting to be successful, making honest music, writing about other people, writing about her breakup, Shadow Boxing, writing about platonic relationships, Hurt Less, writing about friendships, having a healthier outlook on life, being grateful, being raised Christian, accepting failure, conservative politics, coming out, having a support system, her new album Turn Out The Lights, learning to embrace her personality, music allowing release, fighting with her best friend, not wanting to waste her life being sad, music being her purpose, and a lot more! This is the first interview I've seen of her, and it's remarkable how straight up eloquent she is. Most artists can explain their music well but she's aware of it on a level I haven't seen very often.

I think what Julien is articulating in her eloquent, mature way is a lesson in resiliency. I completely relate to her quote near the end when she says (paraphrasing), "Why do we keep going and subjecting ourselves to more inevitable pain." I often think the same thing on a daily basis. Yet when you overcome a trial, you become more resilient and you develop a deeper sense of gratitude for what you still have. Her expression, her art speaks to this. That's why we bother, because beauty, in all its forms and disguises, can pull us through.

jesus christ my heart kept breaking the entire time she was talking about her past relationship ending. i wouldnt have been able to hold it together quite that articulately -- no matter how much time had passed.

She is an inspiration. To me she is the epitome of the human that feels so much but is still able to express not only feelings but thoughts with eloquence, grace, honesty and compassion. I've met her at her concert and was also amazed by how much she 'listens'... A true empath, most beautiful!

This young lady is incredibly articulate! I'm amazed at her reflections of the lyrics and how her life experiences have influenced her art. I had not heard of her prior to her appearance on Colbert, and now I can't get enough. Truly impressive!

I was introduced to Julien Baker's music by my boyfriend, and we went and saw her in Lawrence, KS last year. We are planning to attend her Lawrence performance this year too. I can't wait to go and see her perform some of her new songs!

this interviewer was annoying, i felt bad for julien. Just because her songs reveal deeply personal things doesn't mean she wants to discuss those deeply personal things in interviews- and it was really uncomfortable the way he asked her if shes a lesbian, as though thats relevant to her music.. felt like he was exploiting her and really asking her questions she clearly didn't want to answer... she did incredibly anyway but wow dude needs to calm down

This interview looks like a kidnapped girl in some run down motel with some shady guys asking for money to her parents. Guys come on this is the longest and the intimate interview with julien and you rent a run down motel placing julien in the corner, great ideas.
