Julien Baker is a lyrically complex singer-songwriter whose solo career exploded upon the release of her critically acclaimed debut album, “Sprained Ankle.” She has been touring and performing in bands from a very young age, but her past musical contributions lie mostly in punk and rock. As a solo artist, she crafts emotionally-wrenching tunes that frankly describe death, loss, and faith through poignant autobiographical illustration. In person, Baker’s goofy, fun-loving sense of humor seems in complete opposition to the character represented on the cover of “Sprained Ankle.” This polarity is paramount to Julien Baker’s appeal; she writes the music she does for catharsis and then opens herself up to life. She is a well-read and equally well-spoken person whose has a vested interest in Canon literature. This knowledge isn’t a prerequisite for storytelling, but it clearly informs Baker’s lyrical approach. The stories in her songs are short and clearly told. Her record references drug use, a near-fatal car wreck, anxiety, and struggling with her faith, and Baker’s simple, powerful approach lays these intense issues out in a way that makes them universal truths we all feel with her. On stage Baker is a performance powerhouse; she commands attention from the first reverb-soaked strum, and holds it until her thought is finished and all delay has rung out. Baker is the kind of performer you have to see live to truly understand.

Late to the party here and not to be a killjoy, but that popping sound at "hideous mistakes" sound is due to a faulty cable ;) It's totally random, just very noticable because of the reverb. Other renditions on RU-vid don't have it, neither does the album recording. Great rendition of this song, amazing how powerful this girl and her guitar is. Wow.

It's near impossible to listen to her full album and not cry at least once or twice. Her, her voice, and her lyrics are all beautiful. And the single guitar makes the lonely/sadness of her music all the more punctuated.

My friend, she was a girl, died at age 17 last month and I literally have tears when listening to this song I'm fan of Julien since 2015. Her voice reaches deepest parts of my soul. I absolutely love her❤

The only reason I'm Agnostic is because just as there's no solid proof of a God existing, there's definitely no solid proof there isn't. I've resolved myself to thanking and speaking to "God" in my alone time. If God doesn't exist, what do you have to lose by doing that?

Memento Mori If you believe anything that's not real, what do you have to lose? It depends. It might be nothing, it might be everything. It depends on the length one takes their belief to. Does it influence life choices, career path, social interactions, and what people think about themselves or the meaning of life? You seem to think belief is at least harmless. To you as an individual, maybe. To humanity as a whole, belief was definitely harmful. In some kinds of Christianity in particular, more than others, believers have an outlook of thinking themselves under permanent threat. Fear is their paradigm: fear of the worldly corruption, fear of Satan's temptation, fear of God's rejection. Between war, terrorist acts, mass suicide, cultish behavior, fearing modern culture and the bland wide-spread not living out your life, I'd say faith can do plenty of harm. When I said there's nobody upstairs I meant the Christian God. I didn't say there's nothing divine anywhere. Maybe the Tao is looking out through your eyes right now. But who knows really? Might just as well say simply there's no God in any shape and size anywhere. Until further notice.

One of the most emotional songs I have heard in years! Truly amazing! But, did anyone notice that she's wearing the headphones the wrong way round? Check for the "R", which you can clearly see on the right (= the left from her perspective) at around 2:40. I noticed, cause I'm wearing the same ones right now. Doesn't matter though, cause the guitar and her voice is inherently mono.
