Caesar was already in Italy, in Gallia Cisalpina, before the civil war started. He stayed in Ravenna. There he first tried to solve the situation, in a political and peaceful way, and he wrote letters to Pompey. Caesar suggested that Pompey would meet him in Ravenna to talk about it in person. Caesar himself could not return to Rome as long he had that command of his provinces. Because a personal conversation has much more effect than letters. But at one point he did not get any answer at all. From Ravenna Caesar crossed the Rubicon, from there he went to Ariminium, (today's Rimini) Then he went to Rome first, but in the meantime Pompey was leaving Rome together with most of the Senators. Caesar tried to catch up with Pompey, not to fight him, but he still wanted to speak with him, at that point. Caesar tried to stop Pompey at the harbor town of Brundisium, but that failed. So Pompey got away to Greece. From there Caesar first went back to Rome, also because he didn't have enough ships ready at that moment. So he could not follow Pompey immediately. From Rome Caesar first went to Spain. Because a large part of Pompey's legions were still stationed in Spain. Caesar had managed to disband those legions, peacefully, not by fighting. But because of his smart tactics and maneuvers. Caesar gave those soldiers the choice to join his legions, or to go home. And many soldiers did join Caesars legions. When that was done, he went back to Rome again, to prepare himself to go to Greece and Pompey. After the battles in Greece, Caesar went to Egypt, from there to Asia minor, the battle at Zela ( Veni, Vidi, Vici.) After Zela he first went back to Rome, and then he went to Africa. After the battles in Africa, he again went back to Rome. His last battle was in Spain...The battle of Munda on March 17th, 45 BC. This movie is very great, but a lot of what happened in Caesars life is missing in this movie. But ofcourse it would be a very long movie, if they really show everything.

Caesar was a war criminal. He incited the Gallic Wars and was fairly genocidal to one tribe at a time. He couldn't enter Rome as a civilian ever again as his immunity would be over. Pompey was his only conceivable option thru the Triumvirate and Julia. The Triumvirate was based on mutual self-preservation and enrichment. Gaius was broke except for creditors. His bribes with borrowed money were obvious. Who better to hang around with than Conniving Crassus and Dashing Pompey. That was over. Disbanding each other's legions was not possible. Why should Pompey or Senate concession at all? Cato was an extreme stick in the mud. Caesar's chance to live was in the Title of Kaiser- which is Not his name. Bringing an army to Rome was completely illegal. He WAS an enemy of the state. Then all that mess after his death, that gave The Seat to some Real winners. The Julio-Claudians were pretty bent. His battle tactics were not innovative, but necessary as the best options at the time. His foresight and planning were "For the time being" most of the time, as he Never had secure supplies. Lucky that his men ate grass and promises. He went to Egypt to collect, not to bang Cleo into friendship.

Great gem to watch' roman history whether in documentries or in this case film is always intersting and this film with major players like the late Richard Harris, christopher Walkin , and of course Mr.Big! was a brilliantly done film. The life of Caesar was amaing in all that he accomplished. Although you cannot include all that he did in a movie, his accomplishments are amazing. Thank you for a entertaining film.😃😃

First Caesar conquered the recalcitrants of Spain. He gained a fortune from commandeering the lion's share of the silver from the Spanish silver mines. After returning to Rome in Triumph, he then went to Gaul.

Caesar accomplished so much this that it’s amazing how much this movie just skips over. His government in Spain, going to Britain, crossing the rhine, Helveti. I mean the Gallic wars was practically a montage and the civil war was barely shown. In Alexandria Caesar was besieged for months alone. Remember he also then fought a rebellious king in present day turkey on the way back to Rome. Dude did so much even a long movie can barely cover his life.

thought this movie was a bit off kilter so did a little checking , the guy Richard Harris portrays was Lucius Sulla , Caesars father's brother in law was Gaius Marius , he and Sulla were compatriots at one point but belonged to differing political idealogies , Marius was an "optimares" supporting the ruling classes while Sulla was a "populares" dedicated to the masses, both vied for army control to fight "Mithradates of Pontus" which was granted to Sulla , and off he went , soon after a "Tribune" transferred the power to Marius . Sulla turned around and marched on Rome , the first time the army had ever done so , and Marius was defeated and sent into exile , so off goes Sulla again but Marius returned to Rome and eliminated a lot of Sulla's supporters , Sulla returns and this time kills Marius , and sets about sorting out Marius's supporters , which is where we enter in the movie , and in the purge Julius was rounded up but escaped with others and headed off to Crete , this was 85 B.C., Sulla instigated himself as dictator until 80 B.C. then stepped down but retained the position of consul in the newly reformed consular government, resigining in 79 B.C. , only to die in 78 B.C.! on hearing of his death Caesar returns to Rome , and lacking any real means and having no political clout he turns to legal advocacy , gaining the support of notaries such as Cicero and Scippio , so begins the next phase of his life and so much happens in the next 15 years it would take 3 movies to detail it all , above all though it seems Julius was an aloof prick who really thought he was important , (well o.k turns out he was kindof ) but enough , enjoy the movie

Where is Crassus in this film? He was part of the triumvate that Julius Caesar was in; it was he who defeated Spartacus and was killed afterwards in the desert battle(which name escapes me at the moment)against the Parthians.

Vercengettorex was an impressive first king of the Gauls. He stood 6'3 to 4". His sword was massive. He was adorned in rainment that today would likely cost $1M. It hurts to watch the end. Gaius Julius Ceasar had great looks and a family that was impressively Patrician from the fall of the Etruscan kings. Jealousy did Ceasar in.

And then to After beat pompey and his cohorts because they sought to undermine. His victorious. Return because of the wounded. Pride. Having been eclipsed by a man once beneath his station was more than he could take Ceasars return and righteous taking his place. As. Pontifax even though he. Wanted to forgive past trepidation to bring peace if they would stop seeking to harm him as sulla. Was so. Looked upon with fear because of his proscription. factually inaccuracies: Gauis Julius Ceasar had blonde hair. He was made a priest to Jupiter Optimus Maximus by Gaius Marias who played wargames with his young nephew. Marius exiled to the priesthood, away from military service, because he feared Ceasar's legacy would be greater than his own if he pursued a military career. Gaius Marias was NOT Lucius Cornelius Sulla's greatest enemy! Gauis Marius rescued Sulla from being a noble pauper to a military career.

What did he have...20,000 men? doesn't take long to clear out any deer and food in the vicinity to feed that many.

Why can't they actually get accredited historians to write these instead of stoned hippies trying to find their next fix.

Because Romans had things called razors and fullers to clean clothes.

Why is it that the Europeans make better movies than Hollywood?
@jelraagas7489

Cause they had so much history in Europeans and made the movies true to life stories very amazing to watch 🥰

Hollyweird likes children. Full of pedophiles. Unfortunately, directors aren't focused on historical accuracy, elegance/ perseverance of adults, beauty of nature and certainly not devotion to faith or country.

because they have classically trained actors not just pretty faces. although Christopher Walken and Christopher Noth are in this one.

I dare say one good movie hardly raises European film making as a craft wholly superior think about all those garbage french movies that end the shitstorm dumpster-fires they crank out with the word" fin " as if to declare the smelly heap to be" good" or" fine " like a cherry offered to wash away any taste remaining from such At least we Americans don't have the unmitigated gall or should I say " gaul" to simply declare our own creations to be good or fine gratuitously Same critical remark from the critics Now that we have both discharged our wretched. Biol spewing at one another Let's address the merits as they are And of course there is no accounting for taste I'm pretty sure a lot of American popular culture in tv and film is sought after and shipped to many countries I've seen a few ifc flicks that were ok I guess to be fair . A lot of tripe crappy movies were out out in the 80's and 90's but American film making is still very much a part of the zeitgeist and therefore remains relevant movie styles continue to change and evolve as time goes by I'm curious what are some European films that are exceptional in quality I a would like to try some others Maybe I'm not giving it a chance I give you the benefit of the doubt

Scratch that movie making doesn't demand purity of nationality to contribute now any movie about Rome I will give a chance I find even such an old antiquated civilization imparts much not only culture but also the richness of etymology traces back to Rome just like how all roads lead to Rome It's actually a lot of effort quite often to venture creating movies not knowing at all how they will be received

Cato should have yaken up the spear himself rather than whisper poison and conspire. To. Have pompey. Take up arms. Cato was a duplicitous. Man of wealth. But who lacked any true grit to oppose him. Properly. In the open. He. Was simply scheming and insidious.
