I agree with you regarding him being underrated. His playing above the rim, understandably, gets so much attention it overshadows what a great all around player he was. Plus a total class act.
Julius Erving is the COAT, Classiest Of All Time and is on my all-time starting five. If you watched him play back in the day you know how his intangibles affected and elevated the game well beyond the great stat lines. If MJ was The Beatles, Dr J was Elvis---he invented rock and roll in the first place.

Dan is by far the best interviewer of all sports shows. He's always able to get his guests to just be themselves and have fun conversations as if no one else was listening. What I'm saying is Dan Patrick is the Joe Rogan of sports talk.

Met Dr. J at a Salvation Army event here in Memphis 5-6 years ago. He took a picture with me and said he'd be back after he finished talking to the people he came to see and then he came back and took pictures with me and my friends. He was so nice!
It's sooo cool to see the Doc alive and doing well, I had the pleasure to meet him once in 1995, he signed a basketball for me, standing outside of a hotel in Palm Springs, CA.

I grew up in Conn and followed Julius Erving when he played for UMass. Later in life relocated to Philly (1982) and immediately bought Sixers season tickets. Had the wonderful good fortune of watching Dr J many, many times- matchups with Bird were basketball nirvana. The Spectrum exploding "Julius Errrvinng" A class act for Sixers and City. Doc doesn't get the credit he deserves. He revolutionized the game. When he retired, it was widely acknowledged that he was #3 on the all-time scoring list, under only Kareem and Wilt. There was a time, after the merger, when the NBA combined ABA and NBA stats. They stopped doing that and as a result have disrespected the legacy of so many great players. The ABA was a more dynamic and exciting league. They revolutionized basketball culture. The contributions the ABA made to basketball were adopted by the NBA and are still impactful today. In the 70's NBA players were jumping ship to go to the ABA, while top college recruits were choosing the ABA over the NBA. From 1971 to 1976, both leagues were in major financial trouble. As they negotiated the terms of a possible merger (which didn't happen until 1976), they held inter-league scrimmages from 1971-76. The stars of the ABA played the stars of the NBA every year. Out of 155 games played, the ABA won 79 games and the NBA won 76. That tells you how good the ABA was. It wasn't an amateur league. ABA players not only contributed to the NBA, but in many ways dominated the NBA after the merger.
My all time sports hero! When I was about 30 he came to a sporting goods store in Vancouver to sign. I waited in line for hours with his rookie card to get signed. When I was 4 back in line, they shut it down & he left. Broke my heart.
It was his last season in pro basketball, I live in Tucson. I went to the Mad House on McDowell and watched the most innovative player ever. They gave Julius gold golf clubs at halftime. Long live the doctor of basketball and a wonderful human being!

Dr.J is so funny, myself growing up in the bayarea,California born In 1985 I'm not sure how I came to know who Dr.J is I admired the #Converse show endorsement attached to his name and it reminded me of MichealJordan and the Chicago bulls and SpaceJam jprdan tennis shoes in the 90's which were really popular and also a clothing store at my local mall called Dr.Js like the online clothing store😊😊😊 but it's awesome to watch sports and economy work together nicknames and brands🏀🏀🏀🏀

Went to my first professional game in 1973 at the Norfolk Scope when a young Dr.J was paired with a younger Iceman. Julius was always my and pretty much every young kid from that time period favorite player. As great a player as he was,he was an even greater person. Wow,where has the time gone? Thanks Doc!
