On this day in Tudor history, 23rd July 1596, Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon, Privy Councillor and Lord Chamberlain, died at Somerset House in London. Hunsdon was, of course, the son of Mary Boleyn, nephew of the late Queen Anne Boleyn, and cousin and favourite of Queen Elizabeth I.
In today's talk, Claire Ridgway, founder of the Tudor Society, gives details of Hunsdon's background and his rise to prominence at Elizabeth I's court, as well as details on his burial and tomb.
You can find a photo of his tomb at www.westminster-abbey.org/our-history/people/henry-carey

@@Gilded-girl Hello Cousin! I am from the Wharton- Collins line. Interesting heritage we have! To be honest, I am in awe by all of this. This was all whispered about when I was a child among my family. It wasn't something they bragged about. Yet I am incredibly proud and know more about English history than many of my cousins here in America. And I thank Claire for that.😊

It’s such a shame that people automatically jump to the wrong conclusions before the right. It was a god - send that Anne was such a good kind sister to want to take him as a ward and take care of him as her own and financially wanting for just about nothing. 🤷🏼‍♀️ And I think it passed on to her daughter Elizabeth I. She also took care of all her other Boleyn relatives. And he in return became a perfect servant.

Yes, Miss Claire, thank you for your hard and steady work. Elizabeth's kindnesses to her sister Mary certainly are to be be admired. Not many relatives would take on the responsibilities of children orphaned. Again, a busy man with many titles (wealthy? duh!). Lord Hunsdon must not have been too much in awe of Elizabeth to turn down Earl of Wiltshire with such curt words. Thank you for this most interesting life and times of Henry Carey.

Pretty ironic that Henry Carey got such an elaborate tomb, a man that Elizabeth loved and depended upon, and Henry Vlll got dumped into the floor. Elizabeth never had a tomb built for her father, can't blame her ,as he had made her illegitimate so many times, and cut off her mothers head. I doubt she had much love for him.

I love how the bells ring at just the right times. I do not think Mary's children were fathered by Henry VIII, especially Henry Carey, as the King had made much of his bastard son by Miss Blount. I think that Elizabeth, as Queen, was just happy to surround herself by what was left of her mother's family.
@mangot589
@mangot589 4 года назад
Beth Janelle I think her daughter was Henrys. But she was just a girl, no need to acknowledge her. That’s just the way it was🤷‍♀️. However I don’t believe Henry Carey was, as he had already tired of Mary, and married her off. And I agree with your assessment of Elizabeth. She always kept quiet about it, but her mother did mean a lot to her, IMO.

Yes, if Henry had been his, it would have been further "proof" for his cause to divorce Catherine of Aragon.
@redjirachi1
@redjirachi1 3 года назад
I have a couple of counter-arguments to that: a)Unlike Bessie Mary was married while she was Henry's mistress. So Henry could never be certain any child conceived during the time was his or her husband's b)Because she's married it'd be a politically poor move, and his later relationship with Anne and the drama that unfolded would keep it a politically poor move

@@redjirachi1 we have no proof that the affair between Henry and Mary happened while she was married. As Claire said in her Other Boleyn Girl video, it could very well have taken place before her wedding. And besides, we also don’t know if it was a long term affair or just a “hit it and quit it” situation, so if he only slept with her once or twice he may not have conceived.

We all owe a debt of gratitude to this patron of Shakespeare's company (The Lord Chamberlain's Men) who protected them and allowed the great plays to be written. If he died in 1596 though, it was only 2 years after the company was established. I believe his son later succeeded him in both undertakings. I've read that he reigned over the Isle of Wight like it was his own little kingdom, and that, though he adored his wife, he liked to carouse and may have died of syphilis.

Exactly they are just rumors. Still they did survive. Why did Henry get adopted by Anne? Being a parent is a very attractive trait. So a friend of mine says. Plus in one ceremony when Anne married Henry, Henry would get an adopted son as well. I am reading a book at the moment with the younger son of Henry Carey.

When Princess Diana died, there was a lot of talk about burials for royals... that their caskets are lined with lead. They mentioned that Diana's was lined with lead as well. Was this practice in existence during Tudor times? Would Henry Carey be "royal" enough to be honored in the same way? His tomb sure indicates he was a person of importance, and perhaps substance as well? Sorry for such an obscure question, but watching these daily videos has really peaked my curiosity.

@peachymeechie1844 4 года назад
I've always been interested in Mary's children as well, but I have always wondered if they were Henry viii's kids or not, but if they were his I'd think he would have acknowledged them because he did recognize Henry Fitzroy and he showed his love to him and pampered him. So they probably were not Henry's, and if they were his kids then he must have had a reason not to think they were his. But on the other hand there are many historians that like to say that both of the Carey children looked so much like Henry viii. But we shall never know.....unless we can convince the crown to let someone do a DNA on Henry Carey and Henry viii, but I definitely don't think that will ever happen. So unfortunately we're left to wonder!!!
@grandmanonnie5

Well knock me down with a kipper; what a beautiful tomb and interestingly (as I look at the other comments) Henry VIII was not given a tomb and is still in a kind of holding place in Westminster with Queen Jane Seymour, Charles I and a demised infant of Queen Anne Stewart. All his plans for a sumptuous monument were never carried through by any of his children (not even Edward and I would have thought he might). Very interesting! Great posting.

Did he really say that to Queen Elizabeth from his death bed when she tried to name him Earl of Wiltshire? He must have been trying to lighten the mood, right? He already had a ridiculous amount of titles, all granted by her.

I think so, and I expect Elizabeth took it in good humour.

Very interesting video! Would there be any possible way to do a DNA test to see if Henry VIII did father Mary Boleyn's children? Also, did Henry ever acknowlege any of his illegitimate children?

The Anne Boleyn Files and Tudor Society - I guess you get rather used to them. It is funny that the often seem to ring at the appropriate time in your stories though. I get a kick out of it. The bells sound as if they’re right next door to you.

Given Henry's pettiness, I'm surprised he let him live in peace especially after Anne's execution.

BackAndStillBgMsDangerus Dangerus He had no reason to go after Mary. She married a man of rather obscure family. She seems to have retired to a quiet life while her family was chasing power. I don't blame her.

@@anneboleynfiles After the extremes Henry went to to remove Anne after she didn't give him a son, it seems like her nephew and ward would be a constant reminder of his decision to divorce Katherine, break with the church, and marry Anne. Moreso because the charges that ended in her execution had to be very humiliating to Henry's ego.

@@jmarie9997 I have seen it suggested a few times that Henry married her off as used goods to William Carey after he tired of her. This doesn't seem plausible, especially if as Claire says there is no evidence of an affair or how long it lasted if there was

I have a thought. If Anne Boleyn’s becoming queen causes Henry to break with the Catholic Church, could this have been the start of America? Not an immediate start of course but would there have been Protestants at all much less ones who felt persecuted enough to head for the new world?

Miss Priss good question. I know that John (the pilgrim) Cary came over on the Mayflower in 1620. I am the 10th great granddaughter of him and the 9th great granddaughter of John Alden.

How much, if any, contact did young Princess Elizabeth have with her aunt Mary and Carey cousins?
@anneboleynfiles
@anneboleynfiles 4 года назад
I don't know if Elizabeth had much to do with her maternal family in her early life, but she would have come into contact with her cousins later at court as they got positions there.

All those titles and the offer of title he turned down in death denied to him in life and yet the greatest tomb of all fit for the rightful King of England. When it was Queen Elizabeth that was Declared Illegitimate. Yet the Boylan sisters had the throne taken from them with their lives. Thus interestingly a descendant of Mary and Carey such as I would be in some regards a more legitimate heir to the throne of King of England, ironic.
