This Sunday we will be focused in the Old Testament in 1 Samuel 29 & 30. It's quite a remarkable story of the Israelites and the Philistines having conflict. In fact, the Philistines were getting the better of the Israelites. David, as a great leader, was under incredible distress. It says of them:
1 Samuel 30:3-4, "And when David and his men came to the city, they found it burned with fire . . . Then David and the people who were with him raised their voices and wept until they had no more strength to weep."
They were under such heavy burden and distress in this battle. A couple of verses later you find something remarkable about David's response in the middle of all this pressure. 1 Samuel 30:6, "And David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in soul, each for his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God."
Here is all this pressure, all this violence, destruction - David was feeling like he didn't know what was going to happen and if his life would be spared. What did he do? He turned to God and strengthened himself in the Lord His God. No matter what's going on - it could be the worse you could ever imagine - God is there. The Lord is there. His grace is there. His love is there. His power is there. It can't get bad enough for us to be overcome when we have a God who has already overcome all the evil in this world. So we are going to trust in Him. Press into Him. This Sunday, don't miss it. It's going to be encouraging and life giving. We are going to strengthen ourselves in Lord our God. We have communion on Sunday at 10:30am.
