To This End We Pray
2 Thessalonians 1:1-12
In this passage, Paul’s prayer is preceded by a stern depiction of the day of Christ’s return and the judgment that will be a part of that day. This would have served as a comfort to Christians who were suffering unremedied injustice for their faith-Christ will see that all is put right. And having this “end” in view (v.11) shaped both how and what Paul prayed for the Thessalonians…and for all his churches (as we’ll see throughout this series). Might it be that our prayer lives contain more material focus than spiritual focus because we do not sufficiently consider the “end,” and what will matter most on that day? On the day of Christ’s return, we will want nothing more than to be able to present our lives as living sacrifices ‘worthy of God’s saving call.’ This is a prayer for a thriving church that is living more and more so as to bring honour and glory to Christ when he comes again.
