I adore Jeeves books! They are so funny. But my favorite Wodehouse book is Mike at Wrykyn.

I am reading Evalina and almost half way through it. i really love how Frances Burney puts in a lot of emotion with the charcters. i feel like slapping Sir Clement sometimes,and i really feel for Evalina and how she is trying to enjoy herself but always has someone bothering her. Madame Duval is a love hate charater for me,but i really enjoying the book. and cannot wait to read more of her books.

I quite enjoyed Evelina, but didn't find the characters quite as well-developed as Jane Austen's books. I'm glad you're enjoying it though!

Thank you for hosting Jane Austen July! I re-read Northanger Abbey and then did some research into Gothic horror literature, including reading The Mysteries of Udolpho, (which was great fun!!). On the non-fiction side I read The Jane Austen Diet, which is a well researched, yet easy to read book on diet and health during the time period of Jane Austen.

Thanks so much for hosting Jane Austen July! I had so much fun completing the challenges. The only one I didn’t fulfill was to read a book by a contemporary of Jane Austen. I am already looking forward to next year! And I am super excited for Victober!

I loved Jane Austen July! I delved more into Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park than I ever did before and loved them both so much! Henry Tilney might be up there with my favorite Jane Austen men.

That Victober mention got me very excited! I tried the Rosamund Pike Pride and Prejudice this time and loved it so much so I really want to try her Sense and Sensibility audiobook too. I loved reading about Fanny Price, I found her a fascinating character. I struggled a lot with Edmund in it though, he was just so flat for me unfortunately. Great video :)
@katiejlumsden

I liked Edmund much more on this reread, but it has taken me many rereads XD Fanny Price is amazing though. I adore her. And yes, the Sense and Sensibility audiobook is fantastic too!

Fanny is definitely up there with some of my favourite Austen characters. Maybe I'll warm to Edmund after a few rereads then (though I imagine it'd take a lot haha)

I did a Mini JAJ. I reread Sense & Sensibility and loved it again and then I picked up Unequal Affections. I though the beginning was a b6ut abrupt on that one, but I really like how Lizzie and Darcy managed to have the same character arcs as in the original, but with different plot points. I was a bit annoyed at how they changed one thing because I like the way it affected Lizzie and Darcy's relationship in P&P better, but it still worked in the end.
@katiejlumsden

I'm glad you enjoyed Unequal Affections - I do think there were a few things I'd rework about the beginning if I were its editor, but the bulk of it I loved!
@TheWordN3rd
@TheWordN3rd 5 лет назад
@@katiejlumsden Agreed. Even as someone who's read P&P multiple times the beginning was a bit abrupt for me. I felt like I needed to go read the first half of the novel first.

Have you read anything by Franny Burney? I find the books I have read by her really funny. Eavesdropping in Jane Austen's England is such an easy and accessible book. It's one I always recommend to people who want to learn about the period. The use of primary sources are excellent.

I'd love to hear what you think about The Unconsoled! It's kind of a love or hate book for a lot if people, because it's quite surreal (I'm one of the ones who loved it).

I agree that Austen exceeds all of her contemporaries but I think Lawrence Sterne was a gifted novelist, though of course he wrote much earlier than Austen. He’s so funny! And I do think his protagonists are interesting, although really he’s always writing about himself. But obviously he’s so very different from Austen so it’s hard to compare them.
@katiejlumsden

Yes, I have heard some book things about him! I ought to try to read some books by him.

Books and Things If you do decide to read something by him I recommend you start with A Sentimental Journey, it’s not too long and it shows Sterne’s full range.

Hi Katie - silly question but could you tell me name of the Austen editions? They’re gorgeous but haven’t seen them to buy anywhere.

So, they're the Pan Macmillan Collector's Library editions. Sadly these exact editions aren't in print anymore. The new ones are the same size but the covers aren't stripey.

I think Moll Flanders (published in 1722) is, especially in its first chapters, a really compelling portrait of a woman’s psychological conflicts.

You found more to like about Marriage than I did. The writing style was stilted, there was no character growth for anyone and with no character growth there's not much story. Even the exaggerated Scottish characters grow boring after a while. I'm surprised I got through it, actually. Bonnets at Dawn had a read-along of Mansfield Park last month, and some of the discussions on Facebook have been so intense. They have had some very interesting guests on the podcast as well.

Nah, I doubt I'll ever be doing a liveshow on my own. I'd do another one with people like for Victober maybe, but I can't string a sentence together without editing enough to do a liveshow on my own.

@@katiejlumsden Juvenilia. You can listen on one of those online dictionaries if you've not heard it spoken before. That's what I do with a word like "epergne" and so on, because I also read a lot of old books.
