It's nearly the end of July and the field is looking pretty young & green, which may be contrast to how many flower farms look, which are lush with blooms. I take off this month in order to maximize the potential for fall and I take along to show you what that looks like!

For me, my sales are just starting to pick up as my dahlias start blooming more and more. August and September are consistently my best months due to the dahlias, which I am known for.

Marigolds for cutting are absolutely awesome and they keep going and going. I had them in zone six a until the frost took them out in mid October.

Great video! Really helpful. My question is about your country store display. Did you make it? The basket is so cute!

@kimandpennyshow374
@kimandpennyshow374 Месяц назад
hey, just had a question. You sell bouquets at stores. Do you sell say 10 bouquets at $20.00 and they up the price or do they just pay you if they sell. I have been looking at few farmers blogs about this. Just wondered how you approach stores and how you come up with a price.
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Месяц назад
The $20 is the final retail price. The store takes care of all the payment (from customer and to the state for sales tax). The store takes a 20% cut for these services and then pays me after on a quarterly basis (this was my requested timeframe). Its consignment so if the bouquet doesn’t sell, I eat it up, but if you manage inventory well, it should happen rarely

Great video! Which varieties of dahlias are you growing?
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Месяц назад
Thanks! I'm focusing on Cornell Bronze, Jowey Winnie, Polka and then a tangerine/peach colored cactus whose name I'm unsure of. Those are the ones in high quantities. I've also got some Kelvin Floodlight and another variety that looks like Kelvin but is more pink!

Hi Jess, thanks for the video. My Lantis are like 2 1/2 feet tall and they don't have a lot of blooms on them yet, but there are a few but they're really really short not like yours where they gotta tell them like that. Do you think they need some phosphorus? Keep up the good work .
@bareflowerfarm

I've actually never grown lantis so I'm not sure! I've actually never even heard of that flower!

How many dahlias are you growing, and do you have an expected number of stems from those plants?
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Месяц назад
I have 30 dahlias! Ironic bc that's roughly the amount I had last year after some rotted/didn't sprout. I would expect around a dozen per plant on the low end?

I like hearing about your strategies. Ex. Grow fewer varieties of dahlias, then increase tuber volume from the high performing varieties. I didn't buy Rootshield for lizzies $$$😅. I have 3 varieties in my 4x8' raised bed and it's setup on drip to our city water. Our mountain/river runoff water is kinda yucky & i wondered if it would cause fungal issues. No problems so far.
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Месяц назад
Thanks for that feedback! It's helpful for me especially as I make future videos. That's great your lisi's seem to be thriving. I would argue that mountain/river runoff may actually be really great bc there's alot of good "life" in that water!
@serenababy6358
@serenababy6358 Месяц назад
@@bareflowerfarm possibly but there isn't a filter and a ton of weed seeds are in the runoff. It's pretty much muddy weed seed water lol.

I Love NJ! How hight is your Dahlia netting, And Why did you double it. Thanks for your answer ! i am a first year flower farmer in France in the Loire Vally
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Месяц назад
Hi! Thanks for watching from France! The height is probably just under 1 meter tall. The netting is double because I found that the plastic netting got significantly damage by the sun's UV and would disintegrate. So, I bought polyester based netting. It came a bit too wide so I folded it in half and hence the doubling. It wasn't intentional!

Agreed, it's definitely not worth buying root shield until you're growing thousands in my view
@serenababy6358
@serenababy6358 Месяц назад
I'm learning that I should plan to lose some of my plants, especially Lisianthus and grow extra. If I'm successful then I can give my extra plants away to friends. Have you tried Espoma biotone at transplant time? I had really good luck with using that.

I cannot figure out celosia. Mine is so stunted that a self-seeded dwarf variety has already outgrown them 😭 it blooms and I pinch but it doesn’t put on any height.

I can relate but in my case, I cannot get the hang of dahlias! They just lay there.. I see little thin growth from the tubers but it doesn't go above the soil. Idk 🤷‍♀️
