“WHAT YEAR IS IT!?” I don’t know why but “in the jungle you must wait, until the dice read five or eight” will randomly pop into my head whenever I’m playing board games. 😂
@DocuzanQuitomos
@DocuzanQuitomos 2 месяца назад
Memorable board games have that effect: they become quotable even outside of the game; oddly enough, the film recognizes this: Allan, jokingly, tries to finish the game as if it was Clue. It's interesting how Clue, and any other board game, now competes in pop culture references with a game that, in general, doesn't exist.

This is like a Peter Pan-type scenario involving an argument between a child and his father, only for the villain to bear a striking resemblance to that father. It’s like… Van Pelt’s likeness manifested into what Alan saw in his father as a kid. Regrets, mistakes and all. Jonathan Hyde’s dual role as Samuel Parrish and Van Pelt were quite uncanny.

1:04:18 My headcanon is that Judy and Peter didn't recognize them at the time because it was still amount 6-8 months before the day that the events took place, but that the alternate memories would hit them when they reached that date. Which is probably one of the reasons that Alan and Sarah made sure to meet them beforehand, so that they'd already be on hand to be supportive when those memories come flooding in.

@DocuzanQuitomos
@DocuzanQuitomos 2 месяца назад
It's reasonable she only cleaned and updated the rooms and the common areas, because they were moving into the house and that's where they will be hanging around the most. And, if she did all on her own as a passion project (granting the time laps didn't skip any crew she might have hired XD), it's natural she would take a break before deciding what to do with all other rooms that have no clear use for them, at that moment (I like the film doesn't spell it out, but it leaves some room to imagine how they are making that house their own). But, of course, it's impled Parrish House is quite big compared to an average house, and many like to clean every room first (to an extent, at least) before focusing on individual rooms.

“A game for those who seek to find, a way to leave their world behind” I think the game is looking for people who are looking for an escape. Alan heard it because he just got beat up and would have rather been anywhere else. It’s not explicitly stated but Sarah probably had a good reason for hearing it. Judy and Peter heard it because obviously their parents died, they were by far the easiest targets for the game.

As a born and raised NH native, this movie means a lot to us since they don't usually film here. Most times when anything does film here, it's just certain scenes, but hardly ever entire movies. In high school, I actually planned on going to college in Keene where this is filmed because they have a film program, but I didn't make it there, unfortunately. As much as I like this movie, I've never understood why that hunter is going after Alan like that. The only thing I can think of is that Alan must've done something to piss him off during his time in the game, I don't know. And yes, you two should definitely do a reaction to Zathura.

I loved Jumanji and the sci-fi sequel Zathura: A Space Adventure directed by Jon Favreau.

What I realized is that movies in the 90s had way more heart, charm and are genuinely touching. Something lacking in movies today

Why didn't they just let Alan slip through the floor? The only reason I can think of is that if he did drop to the next floor, that too would become like quick sand. Any other ideas?

The rules of the magic are not very clear (the earthquake splits the entire block, the flood fills just the house, but the quicksand only affects Alan's spot; the entire attic doesn't sink). In any case, we get to see he goes through the floor; in the attic, they have no idea this happened or what may be coming next or if the game will magically kill him if he sinks completely (as if it created some sort of extended dimension where a person fits in the quicksand, rather than going through it... we could even argue that Alan's body may have not been visible through the floor until the next roll of the dice, invoking some other magical effect and deactivating the quicksand; we get to see his legs in the ceiling only after the next turn of the game has been played). After all they've been through at that point, I don't blame them for the paranoia of thinking the worst out whatever the game throws at them (I mean, the game absorbed a child, turned another child into a monkey and is materializing african nightmares in New England; I surely would not want to find out what may happen to Alan if he reaches the bottom of the quicksand).

I’d imagine they’d be worried about the fall. The house had extremely tall ceilings and taking a fall like that could have injured him.

Jumanji is such a good time. My son even asked to by the board game this summer, which is a physical adventure in itself (sigh). lol. My mom and I, quite often, quote David Alan Grier when he says, "Fine. Take it!" after the vine takes the car. That scene is so hilarious to us and when stuff just doesn't go right, depending on the situation, that a line we come back to. 🤣

I remember getting a Jumanji game in a cereal box when I was a kid, such good memories 😌 the spider one was fun you have to hit mosquitos in the web to lure the spiders. The maze was frustrating from what I remember lol I never played the board game unfortunately

Now you need to see 2005's Zathura! Awesome follow up to this movie. The book was written by the same author as Jumanji and has a similar pretense, with a board game drastically affecting reality. And most of the effects are practical!

Important note for possible reactions in the future: Based on the books, Jumanji becomes the board game Zathura(Which is also a move). But the Newer Jumanji moves ignore that and keep the original jungle setting.
