Porgies rock! I scale down my tackle to match the fish and there is no more fun fish in the ocean. Also, it's nice to catch fish you can keep for the table without feeling guilty.
John, did you actually end up marking porgies on this drop? I'm curious, since obviously they were that big and in a large quantity. Or were you more focused on finding structure with your fish finder?
Andrzej - No special reason on the leader except for convenience that I might snip off that jig and put on a bucktail for bass and blues. Plus the water was kind of turbid so the leader thickness would not make a difference on the porgies. 30# would be a better choice on the porgies. Good question.
John- big fan of your videos from the North Fork. I'm curious, why do you use a spinning reel/rod in this case rather than the baitcaster you use for bucktailing fluke?
Hey John, I’ve got lots of porgies near me that I can reliably catch with a hi lo rig and sand worms. But I’d much rather catch them on a jig. Do you bounce on the bottom like you’re going for fluke? Swim above the bottom for striper? Or what exactly are you doing to work the jig through the water for the porgy? Also, porgies around me are average sized. What size hook on the jig would support a better hook up?

John, great videos- Question for you: I've never porgie fished but it looks like fun and my son would probably enjoy it as well. So, where do these fish like to hang out? Structure or sandy bottom or what? I've never caught one when targeting fluke, sea bass or tog, so if its structure, why haven't I gotten any? Seems easy enough to fish for them, I just need to find them! I am in south/central jersey if that helps. thanks!
Clams are my go to love to nail porgys in the summer I use a bait cast set up or super light hit them and the fluke at the same time they do are better eating then stripes

I noticed you had to flip open the bail at 3:35 in order to get some line out so you can get the hook out of the porgy. This is where I find the Live Liner function on my Penn reels come in real handy. I haven't seen you use a Live Liner (Bait Runner, etc.) reel in any of your videos. Do you not like them?
Depends on where you are. Where I am from (Boston), the size limit is 10 inches with a creel limit of 30 fish. Pretty generous considering. They hardly get any commercial pressure so they're pretty abundant.
Hey John how are you!!! :) Ive been subscribed for a while now (2+ years) and love your videos. I don't own a kayak yet but have been wanting to get into yak fishing and especially for Porgy. I have this cove/inlet location near Montauk that holds pretty impressive size porgy and mostly everything. I have seen a school of bass swim through there and BIG fluke. but i would like to go fishing with you this season, maybe you have another kayak lying around . Anyways gonna go clean my gear, Tight lines
Porgies are cool, a good fighter pound for pound, their flat bodies and muscle provide good water resistence. I call them the Sheepshead of the north. Some biologist somewhere should make a sheepshead/porgy hybred clone. Imagine a 9 pound porgy!
im looking forward to trying your technique thursday7/30/15 at this little spot i go to and see what hapens,,,except for the idea about placing the finished hooked porgies in any mesh bag...cause theres been some shark scares lately around my east waters in new york.....so just to keep it xtra safe from my hook ....directly to the cooler inflatables and sharks are not the best of friends as you know..thanks john another great video please post more...and i agree with eating wise porgies seabass,snappers,blackys ...i call them salt water panfish are best in eating....its all i go for uhmmmmm.
John, great video thanks so much for sharing! Do you ever have sharks bother you with fish in a bag or stringer in the water? I live in Florida and I'm always Leary of that in the salt and gators in the freshwater when I'm taking... Thanks again for your great videos!!!! W.
+Walt G I would definitely not do a bag or string that is left in the water in Florida. A shark will definitely try to attack it and maybe tip your boat XD
Ive never had any luck catching any stripe bass/bluefish or any fish on lures/jigs. I fish in NY and I assume I won't be able to start fishing till about june since I can only fish from shore or on a little rented skip boat. Do you have any books that go into detail on what weather conditions and techniques required to fish with lure/jigs, and even what color/shape for specific weather conditions? Thanks!
use a sabiki rig to catch harring near shore, then cast out the harring with a 1 once weight and it works. thats what everyone on the hudson fishing from shore does.
kinda risky having a fish bleeding in water can attract Mr jaws and take that bag and kayak don't, don't be over confident you just don't know what can happen.
Iki your fish, respect your catch and keep them in the best possible eating condition. Do u realise ur fish a stressing to death. It makes the flesh firm.
