Adelaide’s charismatic diesel hydraulic 2000/2100 class railcars entered service in February 1980, serving the South Australian capital for 36 years. Originally owned by the State Transport Authority, twelve powered 2000 class cars were constructed for the broad gauge suburban network, along with eighteen 2100 class trailers. In the late 1980s, the original MAN V12 engines were replaced by two 6 cylinder Cummins engines driving a Voith hydraulic transmission. The units earned their nickname ‘Jumbos’ thanks to the unusual raised driving cab, akin to a Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet. The driver accessed the cab via a staircase located behind a doorway to the left hand side of the front passenger seats. When this video was filmed, the entire southern half of the Adelaide Metro rail network was closed due to electrification work. This project would render the 2000/2100 units out of gauge for all of the electrified lines, the cabs being too high for the catenary. Moreover, the delivery of 22 Bombardier A-City 4000 class electric multiple units would mean that all non-electrified services could be adequately covered by the newer 3000 and 3100 class diesel railcars. We took the opportunity of riding one of these units on a limited stop ‘express’ service from Gawler to Adelaide in September 2013. At this time, the Gawler line had had some electrification masts installed. Unfortunately, this scheme was later shelved, although it is hoped that it will finally be completed in 2021. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this video. Please leave comments below. Thank you.

I miss these Jumbo trains. 😫 The smell of the diesel🤤, the sound of those massive engines, the coziness of being inside the cabin on a rainy day, the toot of the horn, and taking trips up to Belair as well as the express to the Royal Adelaide show. I also remember how intimidating and awesome they looked coming down the tracks to come and pick you up. I want to ride them again...even if it's just one more time.. They are very special to me and they are a part of my childhood. RIP Jumbos

They were indeed very impressive and unusual units Zaco, and I loved the sound of them. I’m not sure how they would have gone on under the wires though. I’ve heard that the railway museum in Port Adelaide isn’t able to run their preserved unit on the mainline because of the new electrification.

I was in Adelaide one time and made a point of travelling on one of these awesome trains. I waited at Islington for one to come along northbound (2 or 3 trains passed before one came along) I jumped into the rear 2100 car and was dismayed to discover that it was a trailer! At the next station I jumped out and ducked into the centre 2000 car, and that was much more fun and satisfying! I particularly remember the “false start”, where the driver took up the slack in the couplings before powering off up the line. Very impressive broad-gauge trains! Much much bigger than our (Perth’s) tiny little narrow gauge run-abouts ha ha!

As well as looking great they sounded brilliant did they Cameron? Unfortunately, I was travelling in a trailer for this journey so didn’t get so much audio entertainment. By this time, the 2000/2100 units were only operating peak hour services, with very few left in service.

@@kartwheelkarl Thank you for your reply! Yes, the Jumbos sounded awesome. The engines sounded very powerful, even while idling at stations. They were well isolated from the cabin, though. You could hear them, but it wasn't overwhelming. It's a shame things get old and too expensive to maintain! This is not to take anything away from your video. I sacrificed the view down the line for the experience of riding in the centre power car. The train I was on had three cars, trailers on each end with a centre power car. I got a front window seat on a 3000 car on another occasion. 🙂

@@cameronbrown7925 Not only was their age against them Cameron, so too was their size! As electrification spread (albeit very slowly!) across the Adelaide network, the Jumbos found themselves restricted to none electrified lines due to their height. And as the EMUs arrived, releasing other diesel units, the 2000s became increasingly surplus to requirements. From what I’ve heard, the Jumbo now preserved at Port Adelaide museum will never be allowed out onto the now electrified mainline, and the unit preserved by Steam Ranger can’t run until they shave a bit off some of the platforms!

In all this time no one even got a glimpse of what the driver's cab looked like?
@kartwheelkarl
@kartwheelkarl Год назад
I really would have loved to have been able to show the cab Keith, but access to the cabs on these units was extremely difficult! To the left and slightly behind where I was sitting was a door. Behind that door was a flight of stairs, leading up to the driver’s ‘cockpit’ (which seems to describe it better than ‘cab’). From what I could ascertain, the driver’s feet were roughly to the left of my head, behind a solid wall. It was impossible to see inside without going through the door and climbing the stairs. And because the driver’s front windows were so high up, you couldn’t see inside the cab from the platform either!! I did however, stumble upon a video of a driver driving one of these trains, filmed from behind and above the driving position. I’ll try to find it again and send you the link. Thank you for your comments.

As far as I’m aware there is indeed one unit now in Port Adelaide Museum, but from what I’ve heard they can’t take it out onto the mainline because of the overhead electrification. I also think there’s one at SteamRanger but I’ve heard that can’t run either because of platform clearance issues!

At last eh CM ? When we first moved to SA in 2013 , masts had already been erected on the Gawler line. We visited a new housing development next to the northern end of the line where the builders were proudly announcing that there would soon be a fast new electric train service to Adelaide. Anyone buying there would in fact have had to wait over seven years for that service to start!!
@AndreiTupolev
@AndreiTupolev 3 года назад
A similar design to some Japanese trains, and the Dutch ICM. Looks like only one car was powered then, and the others were trailers? But they all had cabs?
@kartwheelkarl
@kartwheelkarl 3 года назад
The twelve 2000 class were powered Andrei, and the eighteen 2100 were trailers. They were always arranged into two car 2000 + 2100 or three car 2100 + 2000 + 2100 formations, but the match ups weren't fixed. Hence the need for cabs on all of them.
@pcorf
@pcorf 3 года назад
Sometimes a single 2000 would run Adelaide to Port Adelaide to Dry Creek to Adelaide (on a weekend in either direction) in order to be turned around. The railcar would run in reverse during some portion of the trip and then be recoupled to it's trailers upon return to the railcar depot.
@kartwheelkarl
@kartwheelkarl 3 года назад
@@pcorf I would have loved to have seen that happening PC. The driver must have found it difficult in reverse - I don't recall there being any backwards facing windows in the raised cab so visibility would have been zero surely? Did he lean out or was he directed by someone looking through the rear door?
@coolmetro99
@coolmetro99 Месяц назад
do they still use the 2000 classes?
@kartwheelkarl
@kartwheelkarl Месяц назад
Sadly not CM. All Adelaide metro services are now in the hands of either 3000/3100 class diesel railcars or 4000 class EMUs. A few 2000/2100 class units have been preserved (at the Port Adelaide Railway Museum and Steam Ranger Heritage Line, but I believe there are problems with loading gauge (relating to overhead catenary wires and platform faces respectively) that limit their operation.
