Japanese Scallops known as HOTATE are truly massive, much larger than in most parts of the world. Hokkaido is very famous for them especially the Sea of Okhotsk and in this episode we'll visit the seaside, where they harvest them to a restaurant in Tokyo to eat them - SEA to TABLE Experience!
Thank you to Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for the support!

Soy sauce + Butter is the best sauce ever! You can have that with potatoes, corn, mochi, anything! I love that Japanese use the whole scallops including the skirt around the main part whereas the U.S. uses only the main part. The skirt part is the best when you can get the winter hotate, like the chef said. I wish I can buy the whole hotate as good as the ones from Hokkaido here in the U.S.! They just looked soooo yummy John!!

Thanks for alerting me in response to my pre-video Super Chat that there would be some questions in the chat. As you promised the playback was fun too even though other commitments kept me from watching live. Really enjoyed the two polls you offered and suggest to others to watch with the chat replay to learn the results.

John , I just had Scallops at a restaurant in San Diego , it was just 4 Scallops Grilled , $21. They were barely half the size of those Hokkaido Scallops .

Wow! Yes - these are the best of the best, they seem to put a lot of love into the craft of raising scallops in the sea. It was fun watching them squirt around too. They seem so happy. I hope k can make a longer documentary about it in the future for the other channel.

In the chat John said it was about 3,200 yen for everything including some we didn't see him eat. Not bad! Maybe the ones he took home were separate though from that box that arrived from Hokkaido at the beginning of the video?

Hi John. Great video about scallops. They're one of my favorite type of seafood. I've never had them fresh to try them sashimi style but usually I'll have them grilled or fried. Hokkaido is at the top of my list of places to visit on my return visit to Japan. I'll definitely give this a try but will have to plan that around the time they're in season. Thank you so much for sharing this! 🤙

I didn’t have a chance to actually go to Hokkaido which is a shame. I hope I get a chance in the future, for main channel, I’d need to be more thorough and get more shots of the industry. Not enough story but this was a fun episode for GO and something I would like to more here, simple edited videos.

I think it’s personal preference - the black sac I can’t eat, too bitter. The rest is chewy and the center is pure deliciousness! Goes great with Japanese sake and recently I like with carbonated water with lemon or lime squeezed in 😂 refreshing!

John, you're Japan's ambassador, showing the wonderful and unique sides of this magnificent country. Focusing on aspects one may easily overlook. Hopefully encouraging people to venture out into the "true Japan". My husband and I love your channels. After this video I am now tempted to try scallops, which I never even considered...I couldn't help but also think of @ericsurf6 during this video, knowing how he feels about scallops. Getting the chance to try Hokkaido Hotate may actually convert him into a scallop connoisseur! Next collab, when?!

Hello!! As an expert in marine creatures I can say that the size of scallops depends on the species, perhaps the one from Japan is larger than the one from the United States. By the way, all the dishes looked very delicious, I would like to try them, here in Mexico we eat a lot of shellfishs but we add spicy sauces to them, it also taste really good.

the sea scallops you had at first, as sashimi, don't seem to be any bigger than what we get here in the States.... are you sure you're not thinking of the small ones called Bay Scallops? ... then again, I'm fairly certain we have ours imported and they're always frozen..... I know their are fresh scallops here off the coast of New Jersey but it's a big thing you see in many places... I mean it's New Jersey.. do you trust the waters around here?? lol
@onlyinjapan
@onlyinjapan Год назад
I grew up in New Jersey - they’re not remotely the same size. I’ve eaten all kinds of scallops around the world, still haven’t seen them bigger than here. I think they’re even bigger in the winter season. I remember getting 20 for ¥500 in Wakkanai at a BBQ outside by the fisherman. I left so full! It must have been more than 2kg of scallops grilled in the shell with a little soy sauce and butter. Really love the scallops here. Nothing wrong with the US ones but they are smaller and not as fresh, usually frozen.
