Thanks for another great video... The thing I love most about Eddie's playing is the way he resolves a lot of his licks, particularly when he's hitting on octave harmonics, he just always knows which notes to make it feel warm and sonically comfortable to the ear. Probably my favorite example of this is during his solo on Live without a Net when he gets toward the end of the solo (around the 10:25 mark if you're watching just the solo on RU-vid). The way he taps the octave harmonics and bends them to the desired pitches over and over again, only to resolve to a very pleasing note... And he doesn't just give you the note, he flirts with your ears for a little while, because you know that particular note is coming, and that makes hearing it that much better when it arrives.

What a great lesson, Marty! I was going to suggest you this song and here it is. Many people don't know that Eddie was a huge fan of Clapton and Page. As a matter of fact Rudy Sarzo posted on Twitter that he once met with Eddie at the Rainbow Bar on Sunset Strip and Eddie was so excited about the release of the first Van Halen album that he hoped the record had the same impact of Led Zeppelin I.

Thanks man! I was a little cautious about doing a lesson in this song, but it’s got some really cool parts and there’s a lot to be learned from it on several levels. Cool story about EVH. I dont doubt it. I think Van Halen are pretty much America’s Led Zep.

This is great for the studio cut, which is in standard tuning. But Eddie plays it live in what sounds to me in Eb tuning (my guitar sounds like his live) and that's how I want to play this song...live. I have seen every live version of this song on RU-vid here from the '80's to '00's. He starts the solo every time on the 20th fret, not the 18th. He only has 22frets, so its not hard to see his finger between the two last dots on his fret board...20th fret. He then goes to the 8th fret for the pedal tone of the solo...so, 8th to 11th, 8th to 11th, etc. But on the notes for "I got my back against the record machine...I ain't the worst that you've seen...oh, can't you see what I mean...oh, that's when I jump" (that's a chorus part, right?)...I'm still learning music as a guitarist/bassist/pianist so forgive me here...but if you watch his hands live (including what I think is the best version of this song live from the camera view/angle/focus perspective, not lead singer perspective (this guy is okay, but no DLR or Sammy by any means)...but watch Eddies fingers (on that chorus, by the time the camera gets on Eddie, it's on the last run of that "lead break"...but his finger is at the 11th fret of the A string, and looks like it goes up the low E (which are standard tuning names for sake of understanding)...but in Eb, what would the notes for the chorus (lead break) section be? Does this change effect the solo from the standard perspective? Two frets higher on the start of the solo tells me that there is. I want to play this live, but want to make sure that all the parts are correct to how Ed's playing it live. Here is the video of him playing this live: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CpLQMFUMFZI.html

Hey Marty,This was the most recent one to shoot you a message.I was checking ya & Johnny out & was blown away when ya said ya was from Binghamton.Hope I spelled that right, anyway,I use to play there at the L.I.E. Long Island Expressway, a underground club & Restaurant. That was one of my favorite places on the tour.I thought you were a N.Carolina dude like me.You always wearing your UNC shirts, but anyway I loved that place.Kinda reminded me of Ashville.I used to live there also.My drummer Mark Shwartswood was from Binghamton.Anyway thats great. Then you said you likes the Sammy years better because you were old enough to drink.Same with me except, the Dave years with me,1979 I seen them,I was 18.just old enough to drink.Back then it was 18 in N.C. Crazy hugh?I meant I lived in Ashville,if ya were wondering.
