Dr. Dave discusses, demonstrates, and analyzes various jump shot stance and stroke technique alternatives including the normal under-hand stroke, the over-hand dart stroke, and the sidearm stroke, which is commonly used among pro players. He also looks at useful stance and bridge variations for jump shots that are difficult to reach.

Thank you, that matches my empirical experience, side arm is the way to go in terms of broad range of available shots but requires some re-learning in aiming. You've covered elbow position in the side arm stroke but I'm still not settled on the wrist grip. I'm torn between having wrist in line with the forearm or having it twisted upwards. Hope you can picture what I'm talking about :).

I think a straight wrist is the best approach for most people. But you always need to go with what works best for you as an individual.

Great video, I've been experimenting the sidearm stroke lately even though I'm 6'2", I'd noticed the ratio of 'Pros' who use it versus the underhand. I need to spend much more time with it to feel comfortable. I do wonder if you wouldn't mind breaking down the reasons for removing the 'butt' of a 3 piece jump stick and when to do so versus not.
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards Год назад
Thanks. The 3rd piece should be removed whenever it can be since it is easier to jump with a shorter and lighter cue. Because I am tall, I can remove it only for the dart stroke, where my grip is low on the cue. Some people can remove it for the sidearm stroke, but I need the extra length due to my height.

Awesome I never reached that level to do a jump shot. I was playing a guy one time I didn't know very well we were at his house. He was snooker behind the ball he jumped over it and drew the cue ball back and I knew right then and there He's out of my league.

Dr Dave, Your profile showing the shots illustrates you typically hit below the center core.... I have not been able to do that... I seem to have to hit to the center of the ball to get consistent jump. You also seem to be able to jump using a lower angle, i seem to be well above 45 closer to55, 60.... Looks like i need more practice. I will attempt the side arm approach ... Thanks again for showing shots from all angles... Vince

Hitting slightly below center is better than hitting slight above center, especially at higher cue elevations. See the illustration at the top of the 2nd page here: billiards.colostate.edu/resource_files/jump_shot.pdf The cue and tip can make a big difference, along with the cloth. See: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/cue/jump/ Technique is also critically important. See the videos and info here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/jump/technique/

I think if I practice more with the sidearm stroke, I will prefer it for medium cue elevation jumps. I sill prefer the dart stroke for highly elevated jumps. And I still prefer the normal elbow-up stroke for long, low elevation jumps.

Interesting watch as always Dr Dave. But could I ask you to clarify something about the jump bridge you use at 6:40 in the video please?. I can kinda understand why that specific piece of equipment isn't allowed in tournament play due to the unique swivel design. but I wasn't aware that using an extra tall bridge was prohibited per say. Stacking two bridges to achieve extra elevation is perfectly legal (as you said yourself), and I can vaguely recall Nick van den Berg playing a fairly impressive mid table jump shot during the mosconi cup a few years ago with a non standard extra tall bridge head and the referee didn't seem to have a problem with it, so is there a maximum height restriction or something?. Also, how about the use of a snooker style spider or swan neck bridge. Would those be permitted under WPA rules?. Thanks.
@DrDaveBilliards
@DrDaveBilliards Год назад
Good point. I don't know of any specific height limit. As long as a bridge looks close enough to a traditional mechanical bridge, it should not be a problem. The main issues with the EasyJump is how it is held and supported, and the swivel pivot.

Have you ever tried the one-handed dart stroke? It’s surprisingly easy with a bit of practice. Great for those jumps that are tough to reach. If you’re unfamiliar with the technique, simply hold the stick at the balance point, reach out to the cueball with wrist cocked, steady yourself and snap your wrist when ready.

Hi Dave. Itsn't the type of surface of the table a key factor for junping the cue ball? Im able to jump my cue ball on my 7 foot wooden table only if the cueball is close to the rails, but not if its place somewhere else (specially in the middle of the field). Good vídeo and thanks for answering
@DrDaveBilliards

The surface is important. Jumps are easy on a thicker slate table with a thicker and slicker cloth. Jumping on wood is a lot tougher.
