It was Abe who wrote me a few days ago to tell me that when he heard Django Reinhardt's playing for the first time he thought it was the most beautiful thing he had ever heard and how he made it a lifetime goal to strive for that very sound. So now, he can play a lot of notes, scales and arpeggios, but his playing still lacks that snap that would give that real Gypsy/Manouche sound. He asked me for tips on how to make his playing sound more like Django.

So, I created this short video for you to open the window to the vital things you need to get that true Gypsy Jazz sound.
The three keys you'll find out about are:
🎵 Rhythm
🎵 Technique
🎵 Improvisation strategy
This'll be great for you whether you're just getting started with this style or are already deep in the journey (you can use this nice recap to make sure you aren't missing any key elements) whether you play Gypsy Jazz or any kind of swinging Jazz. Django was first and foremost a Jazz musician.

Yaakov youve improved my playing more than any other teacher and I’ve only implemented perhaps 1% of the things you’ve taught. You’re a great teacher and player.

I love the way you have taught vibrato here, this is new to me and sounds really strong. I think it should be called 'French Vibrato' because it sounds like Edith Piaf!

Never thought about it... For me it's a mixture of how I learned from some very good Gypsy guitarists and B.B king...

@@GypsyAndJazz Hi Yakov, thank you for the reply, I've played classical guitar vibrato, side to side, stretching and squashing the string (good on nylon) and electric guitar vibrato with a fine wrist rotation, but the movement you've shown can have more speed and force if you want it. It does certainly sound like the recordings of Django and I think it's very emotive when used tastefully. I'm having a lot of fun trying it!

Yakov , teach us the GYPSY JAZZ scale that other style guitarists can use to improvise

In Gypsy Jazz the improvisation is mostly around chord notes - triads and arpeggios, and not scales and modes. You can check out these lessons: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9xnvsiATQXU.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oG48jTfTIBg.html The only scales that is being used a lot is the harmonic minor scale from the 5th degree (also known as mixob9b13 or major Phrygian) for Dom7 chords You can check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BYy1apGBymQ.html Cheers!

To anyone thinking of diving deeper into GJ I can recommend from experience buying a course from Yaakov. He’s passionate about his students learning and an astute teacher. I don’t say that because because he asked me to, I say this because it’s true
