A Little Life, my most cherished book so far, and it’s my third time rereading it. I relate to the main character, and cried so much during it. The writing style was so easy and natural to read, it was a funny, sad, moving, eccentric, exhilarating, and horrifying book. Most of all it’s a love story. But also it’s not just a “romantic” love story, it also shows a love between friends, so strong and unbreakable, as well as family ties.

Definitely make this a monthly thing and don't worry about the length. With a video like this, it is lovely to settle down with a cuppa and an Amazon/Abe Books tab on hand to do some shopping. :D Also, I totally know what you mean about overanalysing books as a lit student, it is so tough, right? Haha. xxx

Also, I would love to see a video about you as a reader - do you usually buy books or do you borrow from a library? And if you buy, do you always keep them or do you get rid of some from time to time? My bookshelves were full and I had to do a purge recently, my heart is still recovering. x

I really enjoyed The Secret History, but disliked The Goldfinch. It was ridiculous from time to time and while I really enjoyed her writing style I agree that it was so slow-paced which made it a bit boring. You're the only other person I know who doesn't love The Goldfinch ^^ I also study English and completely agree that this degree made me more critical. I'm so happy that you're doing book reviews! I can't wait for your other book videos! I would also love to hear you talk more about the books you read for uni :)

Honestly looking forward to these monthly book reviews. It's nice to hear honest opinions on a wide variety of literature. Also, I'm almost midway through The Secret History, which was recommended to me on Tumblr of all places, and am genuinely enjoying Donna Tarte's writing style and character development. I know The Goldfinch is the more "recognized" book in her collection but for those seeking an interesting plot and handfuls of references to Greek tragedies, definitely give it a read.

the narrow road to the deep north is an amazing book. quite harrowing but in an eye opening way. As english students we tend to focus on the west side of the second world war and ignore the events described in the book and the war in the east so it is really interesting xxxx

I haven't read the Hearth Goes Last, but I am a big Margaret Atwood fan. I would highly recommend checking out some of her earlier stuff, namely the Handmaids Tale as well as Oryx and crake. Also I did notice that this video was really quiet, I don't know if its just me but I thought I would point it out.

I read The Goldfinch when I was only about 14 which was most likely a bit young for me to truly appreciate it but I really loved and shelved it as my #1 favorite book ever, thus far, but I think I’ll need to reread it because who knows how much my reading has gotten more and more sophisticated.

I recently read A Little Life and I would like to disagree with one of the point you make: I did not cry because of the sheer horror of it, but for the sheer love that everybody puts into trying to help Jude; for the flickering lights of hope, so dim and hidden in the mud, that ever present, evenm when you understand the hopelessness of Jude's situation; I cried because we all want to be hold and loved, to different extent, the same way Jude and Willem love each other or Harold, or JB or Malcom. It is not the horror that makes you cry but the love that still shines despite the horror.
@KyRussReads
@KyRussReads 3 года назад
I agree so much!!! I never cried at the actual acts of horror Jude went through, but rather the instances where a sense of hope was offered. It crushed me too when that hope was squashed by some of the other characters. It was more or less the reactions of the characters to Jude (and Jude to them) in the present that affected me the most while reading!

Having just finished a little life I do have to agree that it is a very powerful book both in good and bad terms. Although I do have to say that I like its exploration into the mind of an individual suffering from mental health issues as an insight for those that may not fully understand them. On the flip side i also like that it opens up the suffering close friends experience when seeing a friend going through mental health issues and so is powerful in that sense for those reading that may also be suffering. However, I feel like toward the end of the book this definitely became more of a focus, rather rthan friendship, and I agree that Malcolm and JB also disappear which is quite sad.

A Little Life is also unhistorical in the way that whatever background details there are seem to exist in an eternal present, no matter the age of the characters. For example the internet is mentioned in Jude's very early years, but in his 50s there seems to be no progress in technology. Is the ending intended to be in the future? It doesn't feel like it, and maybe Yanagihara doesn't really care. It's another element that makes the events unbelievable.

Please do these book reviews on a regular basis, I really enjoyed hearing your opinion. I completely agree with you on The Goldfinch and A Little Life ( I haven't read the Margaret Atwood). The Vegas section in the Goldfinch felt like it went on FOREVER and drove me a little crazy, when I finished this book it was so frustrating I felt like throwing it across the room and would not recommend this book especially at 800+ pages. A little Life made me feel angry, every person Jude comes across when he is young is a perverted psycho which was unbelievable and did feel like torture porn, just piling on misery to the characters for a reaction from the readers is distasteful to me. I don't know if you follow Jen Campbell but she did a great review of a Little Life, you might like to watch :)

Just finished A Little Life - remembered you had reviewed it earlier in the year so was interested to see what you thought! I personally really enjoyed it but would actually agree with most of what you said, I think you're right about it being a little unrealistic. I think I actually enjoyed it so much probably because of characters other than Jude and the way they related to him rather than Jude himself. I also felt like by the end it was kind of predictable. I recently finished THE SECRET HISTORY (it was a bit on the fence for me; funny enough, the hyper-stylized characters in this novel made the main plot elements feel a bit implausible to me, as I never felt grounded in the story) and plan to finally read THE GOLDFINCH soon. I began THE HEART GOES LAST but ended up putting it down, as it wasn't working for me. Still going to try ORTX AND CRAKE and HANDMAID's TALE, though. Have you tried THE VEGETARIAN by Han Kang, AMERICANAH by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and BETWEEN THE WORLD AND ME T. Coates? Highly recommend! 👌👌👌 and for fantasy: SIX OF CROWS by Leigh Bardugo. Thanks for this great video! ^_^

please make this a monthly thing!!! I've been reading a lot of Haruki Murakami novels and although there are a lot of opinions, i love his style of writing. Btw I read Margaret Atwood's poems in my english class and I remember enjoying it! I've never read her novels though.

Please make this a regular thing! I didn't like The Secret History at all, but have been considering reading The Goldfinch because both my parents liked it... after hearing your review, it sounds like it may not be worth it. Loved this video!

Your opinions on A Little Life are just identical to mine. What you said about it being dangerous isn't an exaggeration and I'm glad you touched on that in this video. I'm in a writing course at uni and the amount of people in love love love with it is just a bit baffling. Amazing review!

Have you ever read Margaret Atwood"d Handmaid's Tale? It's sort of a dystopian novel but also pretty satirical on modern society (and what it could become). Although I've never read The Heart Goes Last, I think perhaps the Handmaid's Tale is better executed. I suggest reading it, particularly with recent events occurring in our society surrounding religion and extremism. Parts of it were dry but I think it was an overall interesting plot and a worth wile read. (If you do decide to read it, MAKE SURE to read the epilogue. I find it a vital part of the book and what Atwood was trying to accomplish with it).
