Would you ever consider doing a video on the different birds that visit your yard? I love attracting birds and am curious what birds other gardeners enjoy. Whenever I see the feeders in the background I am looking to see if I recognize anything 😊

Jim (and Steph) - I love the channel. I'm zone 7 (suburban NY) so we're about 3-4 weeks behind in the spring (especially this year) and our winters usually have significant snow cover, tons of wet, and some weeks of frozen tundra. Amazing that one slight difference in zones. I also garden in a compact urban yard. I've very much enjoyed watching the project evolve and appreciate both the realistic/achievable advice for amateurs, and your own master level eye for plants and design. I think you did some drone overviews early on and it might be cool to see the evolution. Thanks for all you do.

Another helpful video Jim :) I'm in central NC also, zone 8a and have the best results with new plants by preparing the new hole in the ground as usual, then remove the plant from the pot, NOT disturbing the root ball, and set it in the hole - water thoroughly and often until fall when I pull it back out and spread the roots and re-plant. Or I at least set the pot in the ground where it will eventually be permanently planted. That way it gets the benefit of being in the ground where it's a bit cooler and will get more moisture from dew and rain. Leaving it in the pot above ground requires constant watering (not great if using city water) and almost stunts the growth and health of the plant until it is finally transplanted.

Thank you for explaining 'panic watering' especially with hydrangeas. I needed that as I am often concerned that my hydrangeas are failing due to the leaves going limp with intense sun/heat. The kohlrabi's look beautiful - we sometimes use them as a substitute for potatoes.

It’s heating up in Dallas. The thought of June almost makes me wanna cry. Today was tough working in the yard. Coming in to see a new video is always a treat!

I've learned a big lesson this past fall, planting so many things. Some things died all the way to the ground and some outright died. Mostly these were transplants, but some newly purchased container plants too. Almost none did well. The one big exception were my own-root roses. They just woke up and have gone crazy, picking up straight where they left off. If I have a choice, I would only plant in the spring in the future.

All of the water we should have gotten throughout the spring got dumped on our region Monday (5/23) and yesterday (5/27)! My rain barrels are FULL! [Near Chapel Hill, NC] Love these super-helpful monthly checklists Jim. 🥰 It always helps to have a gardener’s backup brain with so much going on.

Jim, thank you! You answered a bunch of questions I had. Like moving bulbs. I had beautiful alliums at the end of my driveway and they started disappearing, I seen a child pull one out! So I want to move the few that are left and wasnt sure i could do it now.

Learn something every time I watch one of your videos. My plants are off this year in middle GA 8b. My sedum are already blooming and my Joe Pye is about to, way early.

OMGOSH, Jim! I added a fountain and a new birdbath. It has been quite enjoyable watching the birds using the new additions. I enjoy the hummingbirds as well. This is the first year that I’ve noticed the hummers go to the flowers more than the feeders. That was my indication that I’m doing a good job choosing new plants for them.

I enjoyed your videos so much. The problem is I don’t have enough space to plan what I would see! 😂😂😂 My husband is fighting the spots with me all the time.😜😜😜

Michigan seems like such a hard state to plant in.. Our springs many times stay cold for too long.. We can have some days around freezing temps in april and even a few frost days in May.. Many times we are at least mid may before I feel I can even plant something and we can sometimes have it only a week in beautiful 50s 60s and then all the sudden get into the 80s even 90s without warning that even us humans have a hard time adjusting to the quick temp change .. So even harder on these plants.. Then our falls I get scared of the cold weather coming too soon when those roots you want them to have time grow before the freeze and that can happen even into Oct. some years.. So I feel the summer is the only time I feel we can put things in the ground safely but oh the struggle to keep them alive and not want to wilt away on us. The Michigander garden experiance struggles can be real

Guilty! I think I have created a "spring garden." I'm running out of room to plant new things, but I have made a promise to myself to shop each month to see what's blooming. I may find some new favorites and replace some of the things I have now. I have way too much purple anyway, so I may start there.

I’m looking for tips from gardeners familiar with Winston-Salem. I’m moving from Texas this month (May 2024) and I need some assistance in building a small backyard garden for pollinators. I designed my own landscape with front and rear patios. Labor was hired for much of the heavy work. My back yard in Texas isn’t unlike the one in this video. At 70, I can’t handle all the physical labor, and while I’m fairly well-studied in plant selection, I could use a sounding board. The backyard is a blank slate with a berm at the back that also needs planting to set the background. The yard is nothing but spread out pine needles. A small black aluminum fence is already erected. I’m hoping to get suggestions for folks I could hire to get the work done. First steps are to assess drainage, define a patio area, and build/amend the beds. Big thank you to those of you who can advise me!!!

I believe we received all of your rain here in northern Kentucky. No complaints because by summertime we will likely be in drought. The past two days I planted dozens of my petite marigold seedlings in between rain showers. I told my hubs that at the first sight of buds I will be clipping them off. You should have seen his expression!😆🏵

Great video! have bind weed growing in my plant bed. What's the best way to get rid of this unruly weed? I keep cutting it at the ground roots when I see them popping up. I hesitate to plant herbs, vegetables, etc while having bind weed in the bed. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi wondering if you could help. I got Couple of grapes vines from a friend 2 years ago and I stuck them in the ground and (whoa) I have a good amount of growth now no fruits howevy. We then had the lantern bugs I did my best with that to no avail but wasn’t too upset since I had no fruits. This season now I checked and I see baby spotted lantern bugs and lots of blossoms for grapes what should I do, I tried the neem oil and I think they like it instead of chasing them away PLEASE HELP someone said I should try lime powder?

this spring my rabbit problem is getting pretty bad.. Have been planting a new flower bed and my iris tubers are being dug up and chewed on, they are even eating my new coneflowers.. Usually my older ones are not touched by rabbits but they like newly planted coneflowers.. Ive used store bought pelts, have tried spreading coffee grounds around which seemed to help for about a week then one morning came out and they enjoyed a meal.. Ive seen a homemade spray of using garlic hot pepper like chili powder and gal of water and a little dish soap and you are suppose to spray this on your plants.. Do you think this would be safe for plants.. I dont want to put it on my plants and regret it later with burned leaves or somehow harm them in some way.. but some have used it and swear it works..

Do you cut back your Mexican salvia late June/July? The person I bought it from told me to cut it mid summer for the best blooms

Hi Jim, I planted broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower in spring. They never really grew much and now it’s getting hot here in DFW, TX. Very disappointed. I have amended the clay soil with lots of compost and added raised garden bed soil. West side garden but large trees add shade so they get 6-7 hrs of sun. Thinking of moving them to a raised garden in a shade area under big oak trees to see if I can get them to grow because summer sun and temps too much for them. Thoughts?

Do you ever use cardboard under your mulch?

Why are you not afraid of snakes. You just put your hand under the plants or bushes. Have you ever been bitten? I see snakes all the time in the DMV Northern Virginia .

Of all the things you constantly say repeatedly in your videos, I thank you for talking about not spraying plants with chemicals. Too many people immediately grab the sprayer at the first glance of a leaf with a hole in it. So thank you very much for trying to change people’s mindset on plants and insects.

My father cooked Colrobie larger piece chopped up as a vegetable along with carrots, celery, turnip, onion for chicken soup.
