I didn't get the opportunity to participate in June on the Range last year, but I picked up a few westerns at the Friends of the Library store a while back in anticipation of participating this year. I have no idea which western I will choose. It's whatever strikes my fancy in June. ☺
I bought two World War II-era Western pulps last year, attracted by their great cover art, cheap price and very good condition. Gosh darn but them's got some mighty fine readin' in 'em! I know I shouldn't start with yet another genre of literature as I have more unread books than I can get through in several lifetimes but I feel the pull of the range and the wide open spaces.....
I'm in again this year! I enjoyed June on the Range last year, and this year, I'm reading Lonesome Dove (which is a perfect fit for both June on the Range and my own Big Book Summer Challenge). Thanks for hosting again!

Howdy partner, took part last year and had great fun, so a belated thank you for that. Last times highlights for me were "Dragon Teeth" by Michael Chriton, "Shane" & because it was in someone's top 100 westerns "little house on the prairie" which i surprised by, i had feared that it was going to be like the tv series but was excellent for a children's book

I grew up reading westerns so I'm loving June on the Range. I have 10 westerns planned. I am going to read The Rainbow Trail by Zane Grey. For my Louis L'Amour it's End of The Trail.
Hey, I just read The Curse of Capistrano just a couple months ago. His mask covered his entire face in that one. The Disney Zorro TV series was of course a favorite of mine as a child.
I already for June on the Range! I'm going to make a video about it sometime soon. I was hoping I could find a Cowboy hat for filming the video. You would think it would be easy to find one here in Texas 😂. From Louis L'Amour I have Hondo and Last Stand at Papago Wells. I still need to find a Zane Grey but that should be easy. I have a 5 book collection of Max Brand books in hardcover to pick through. I will read at least one of those. And in my most optimistic moments I think I can tackle Lonesome Dove as well, but I doubt it. I have other plans for June beyond Westerns. I will see you out on the range! 🤠
First ever reading challenge was Horror Mayhem, so I’m going to do June on the Range with a little cheat to start out. Reading a short story collection of Western SciFi called Gunfight on Europa Station but I’m reading a western genre comic this week as well, the next three weeks are classic Western Books I picked up from the second hand store and new one from Kindle Unlimited released last month. I don’t normally read Westerns so this will exciting
I very rarely read Westerns. In fact, I'm not sure I have ever read any. But I'm looking forward to it! I'll be reading Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey (because I love the title). For Louis L'amour, The Haunted Mesa. Then Blood Meridian, a book I've been wanting to read for a while.. and River of Teeth, because Hippos!
I like Westerns, but don't read them that often, so this will be fun! I'm joining Roger, but reading Zorro Rides Again, as I recently found a copy for $1 at the thrift store. I've read the first one several times, own a copy, and enjoy it a lot. I hope you do, too. I don't know which L'Amour I'll read; I recently read Ride the River and thought it was super! I'll see what strikes my fancy at the thrift store or library. I also have Bitterroot by Richard S Wheeler. I've read a few Barnaby Skye novels and found them good quality and entertaining, so I expect to like this one. I also enjoy William W. Johnstone, especially his books set in Colorado, as I grew up there, and I'm due a reread of The Virginian by Owen Wister, so lots of possibilities. When I was a young girl back in the 60s a family friend loaned me his complete collection of Zane Gray and I read them all that summer. The red cover you held up looked like I remember those books - but it was a long time ago. I don't know if I'll read another Gray or not, maybe Betty Zane. It's been ages since I read that, and in grade school my girlfriend and I both had crushes on Wetzel. lol Thanks for your entertaining videos, they always brighten my day, and I even watch the ones with topics I'm not really interested in. lol
Looking forward to this! I've never read westerns but my grandfather did. His favorite author was L'Amour. So in June, it will feel like I'm hanging out with him again. I have Lonesome Dove and three Louis L'Amour books ready to go!

June on the Range... Don't forget the old- time writers like Max Brand, Luke Short and Ernest Haycox! Many of the old B&W movies used their stories. The best Zane Grey was the trio Betty Zane, Spirit of the Border and The Last Trail but a little before the old west westerns.
I will be joining in, but I'm off to an early start. I'm currently reading 'Desert Gold' by Zane Grey which I most likely won't finish until June (it takes me a while to get through his stuff). For L'Amour, it will be 'Heller with a Gun'. Rounding out my selections will be 'The Gun Fight' by Richard Matheson and something by Elmore Leonard, Don Coldsmith, or Larry McMurtry. FYI - I'm always reading at least one Western (I usually have 3-5 books going at a time), but it's nice to focus on an event that others are participating in. Cheers!

I'm reading Blood Meridian. Some might call this a Western but I'm not sure. I also spent a week in Colorado and went to the top of Pike's Peak, so that should count for something.
My father-in-law has about 40 Zane Grey titles , similar to the edition you showed, at his stately cottage. As a collection they look great. There will never be a shortage of west-(erns) up north.
I saw a few episodes of the old Lone Ranger show a couple of years ago (after decades). In one, men came in and said their nefarious activity was interrupted by a masked man, all in white, on a Palamino, and he had an Indian with him. The boss said, "Wait, was the Indian riding a 'Paint ?" Like there were other masked do-gooders all in white on Palaminos with Indian sidekicks riding other-colored horses.
I started June on the Range early with Butcher’s Crossing. Zane Gray ; Call of the Canyon is next. Louis L’Amour ; Honda to follow. Finishing up with Blood Meridian and Warlock.
Found a Louis L'Amour book at one of my local used book shops. Looking forward to participating in June on the Range. Is there a BINGO card like Horror MAY-hem? I enjoy the BINGO card for that.
Last year I read the first three books in the First Mountain Man series by William Johnstone, so my main goal is to pick that series up again and make some progress.
I read The Mark of Zorro last year during June on the Range. You were in Hayward? CA? My grandmother lived there. This year I'm reading Flint, The Ox-Bow Incident, Riders of the Purple Sage, True Grit... and maybe Blood Meridian.
Where's Roger's ten-gallon hat? June on the Range is a good excuse for me to read a western, which I haven't done in many, many months--and I LOVE westerns! I haven't read any Zane Grey in several years, and even longer for L'Amour. Charles Alden Seltzer wrote in that period BETWEEN Grey and L'Amour, so his style is a bit closer to that of Grey. Not as action packed as L'Amour's stories, but a good storyteller, just the same. If you found ANY book at HPB for 10 cents, you found a bargain for sure.
My dad used to read this series called Longarm. It was typical of the genre. About 250 pages, the covers were interchangable from one another. Can't vouch for the quality of writing but basically the cowboy version of the Executioner books. I looked it up once, there are almost 500 books in the series.
I love all your outfits and how they correspond with the videos! It was a kick seeing your Vampire Chronicles video last night with the very verbose and flamboyant outfit there and then seeing the cowboy gear on today lol. Definitely gave me a smile and a chuckle. Good stuff.
I’ve only read one western ever, and that was (not surprisingly) Riders of the Purple Sage. I started the sequel the Rainbow Trail but never could get through it. Maybe June on the range is time to try again!
I once lost a Wagon Train. It was real embarrassing I will definitely read some Westerns next month. Bill Pronzini is one of those writers who really should be better known. Clair Huffaker wrote a book called The Cowboy and The Cossack about a cattle drive in Russia. It is probably the second best cattle drive novel I've read. (The best is of course is Lonesome Dove.) He also wrote a Western called Flaming Lance that became a movie with Elvis. I have the novel but haven't read it or seen the movie. He also wrote for TV westerns. His episode "The Hero" in The Virginian was very good.
Have to say that I used to read Westerns all of the time. I plan to read Zorro because, for some reason, I never have despite being a huge Zorro TV show as a child. Going to reread Comstock Lode by Louis L'Amour. Haven't chosen a Zane Grey yet. Thank you for this event 🎉
L'amour's Sackett Family saga is admittedly a little formulaic but I love them all. Any are worth reading and the order is best in chronological but you can jump in anywhere. Ride the River is great with a teen girl protagonist. Read it to your daughters.
I agree - the Sacketts are good reading, though the first few in the series aren't as good, I think. I just read Ride the River last month and loved it. As a girl growing up in the 60s I yearned for more adventure books with girls as the MC, and even after all these years it delights me to find one!
I actually never read a western (yet). And the only 'western' i currently have is Bonanza 😂. Can i still kind of... join with only that one book? Is it even considered western? lolz. I am curious though... how i will enjoy western. And i do have my own book bingo in my reading journal, where i have the prompt: reading a book from a genre i have never read, or haven't read to often. So that would fit :D
I've had little something stabled, fed an watered, just waiting for June - the second volume of the 1950s western Ghost Rider comicbook. Zorro or Senorita Scorpion may well ride into town too.
I read Lonesome Dove (best book ever) and Hondo last year. Iv picked up a few more Louis l'Amour books since so ill be reading The Daybreakers and a few more in June. Should be fun.
I have a book in mind, but it's a nonfiction history about Hawaiian cowboys who go to a rodeo in Wyoming and are laughed at until they perform well. Does that count?
Posse From Hell is GREAT. I read that and went searching for everything else by Clair Huffaker I could find... which, unfortunately, is a rather pricey enterprise nowdays. He's scarce. See if you can fit some Lewis B. Patten in there, too. You won't regret it. A Killing in Kiowa is especially amazing, and Death Stalks Yellowhorse is great if you want what's basically a slasher novel, set in the west.
@@glockensig Huffaker's Cowboy and the Cossack is one of those books that immediately shot up near the top of my "best books I ever read" list. And luckily that one seems to still be in print! :)
Would you describe Last of the Mohicans as a Western? I know it is set in the Old West, but is that the criteria or are there other things to look for?
Well, it’s a definitely a frontier story. It’s set in 1757, mostly around Lake George, New York. Most Westerns are set at least 100 years later, usually between 1860-1890. Also, New York isn’t in the West. Great book though!

I imagine it's a play on the old cowboy song, "Home on the Range." Home, home on the range/Where the deer and the antelope play/Where seldom is heard/A discouraging word/And the skies are not cloudy all day...
My choices for June on the Range 2024-LL To Tame a Land (I have read it probably 25+ times) or maybe Flint (my favorite LL books), hmm Zane Grey West of the Pecos, and 2 ERB westerns Outlaw of Hell's Bend & Deputy Chief of Comanche County.
