New subscriber here from Belgium 🇧🇪. Bad weather here too! This year I am sowing seeds and growing plants that need a lot of water and not much sun!

It certainly does appear to be a world wide issue this year. I live in an area of England where the main crops grown are wheat, sugar beet and oilseed rape, I wonder how they are fairing. Certainly rethinking what I grow in the future. Thanks for subscribing, welcome aboard! :)

The primary problem is the horrendous cold and wet ‘weather’. This is being caused by geo-engineering flights, with aircraft dispersing persistent trails in a grid pattern, which disperse into a sun filtering haze. This cloud seeding also induces precipitation. This activity is happening across many countries, not just the UK.

I agree that the cold and wet weather is a problem - we've had these issues before but not to the extent that it is happening this year.
@susiea1419
@susiea1419 2 месяца назад
No it’s not! It’s climate change. You can only seed clouds if there and that just causes rain not these terrible storms we are all having. “Wake up oh sleeper”

Cloud seeding does not affect the jet stream and cause cold weather DUH!

I guess your thoughts about the compost are right. I have watched a testing of different composts with self grown plants. Some did not thrive at all. So it is not your fault. Nice garden. Love it. I still have a huge slug problem.
@mums_homestead
@mums_homestead 2 месяца назад
I think they possibly are. The beans and things are doing so much better in the bed with the homegrown compost and the rest are sulking. Thank you for the comment on the garden. Sorry you’re still suffering with the slugs, I think with that one we can safely say we are all in it together!

Vegetable gardening is now a very difficult hobby to succeed at. At least it is if you subscribe to the no peat compost, no slug pellets, no chemicals, no dig, no artificial fertiliser mentality
@mums_homestead
@mums_homestead 2 месяца назад
The thing is I do it for just those reasons-to eradicate all that from my food. Do I reach for the bottle…

I use slug pellets when carrots first appear, you dont need a lot, just put them around the edges of your crops. The lack of sunlight i feel is making things slow to grow.

Try putting your celery where it gets waterlogged.Celery is basically a bog plant.The more water the better your celery tastes & grows

Thanks for the tip - I have it dotted about all over the veg patch and it's the one plant that is doing well once established. I'm assuming all the rain is just what it needs, maybe I'll grow even more next year... Thanks for commenting :)

I have had exactly the same problem with that particular compost! Nothing will germinate in it, even after adding plant food and anything I've planted on into it has died!

We’ve had a similar issue, we used a compost that I’ve never used before and everything we potted from that is yellow sadly didn’t note down what it was, but it did say peat free
@mums_homestead
@mums_homestead 2 месяца назад
It’s really frustrating as it was a well known brand and certainly not cheap either! What I found most interesting was that it was a peat reduced one(bought in error), so in theory nutrient wise it should be better. The mind boggles! Thanks for commenting:)
@sowgrowandcook
@sowgrowandcook 2 месяца назад
Hi Julie, my understanding is that when the temperatures are cool ( especially at night), heat loving plants like beans, squash, etc. struggle to take up nutrients from the soil. I have climbing beans that are planted in really good homemade compost - and it looks as if they’re in suspended animation; they’ve barely grown and some of the leaves are yellow. I’ve also got beans in the polytunnel ( same compost) which look healthier and are growing more quickly. I think once the weather warms up at night and stays warm, they’ll get going and green up. 😅
@mums_homestead
@mums_homestead 2 месяца назад
@@sowgrowandcook I hope that is the case and it does makes sense about them not being able to take up nutrients. I’m still a little suspicious as the ones potted on and protected suffered immensely too…. I’m crossing everything that it warms up soon! Currently it’s raining, again!

Hi, your vegetable garden is so nice and inspiring. Where did you source your woodchip from? thank you.
@mums_homestead
@mums_homestead 2 месяца назад
Thank you for your kind comment:) the wood chip came from tree surgeons that carried out work on our property-we ended up with logs for the fire and wood chip for the paths. I also chip woody prunings and scatter them to keep it topped up.

I agree with you. We bought a well known compost this year, one we buy every year, it’s utter rubbish and full of twigs! Our own compost is so much better and full on nutrients. I’m definitely not buying anymore compost at least I know what’s in my compost. I’ve also had a problem with getting my seeds to germinate, another well known seed seller that I won’t be using. I shall be looking elsewhere.

I’m hoping it’s a bit of that too- I think I’d go into shock being out in the cold wet soil that we currently have! I still think there is an issue as I’ve never had yellowing this bad. I’m really ramping up making my own compost at the mo-if it’s living I’ll compost it!

Watched a homesteading couple in USA who having the same problem... they found a solution by fertilizing with a water soluble solution and within a week everything perked up..they did it and then their soil took over.. something to do with the compost not quite ready ..Living Traditions Homestead they're called...might be worth a look...they thought it was poisoned compost but nope...

I bought verve peat free compost this year and it’s dreadful! Everything is not doing as well as it used to despite putting in blood and bone and potash etc! So no idea what is going on. I was finding plastic it and loads of sticks etc. I’m wondering if it’s too acidic?
@mums_homestead

Oh, the plastic bits-I’m always fishing out bits! That’s an interesting theory too, maybe it is too acidic. We need to all ramp up our own compost making and fast! Thanks for commenting:)
