Celebrating Juneteenth, the oldest nationally commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. #Juneteenth marks the anniversary of the announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas.
Juneteenth commemorates freedom and also emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month of celebrations with picnics, parades, rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, family reunions, park parties, historical reenactments, and Miss Juneteenth contests. With special emphasis in family and community gatherings, it is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future and organizing to vote.
In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law in June 2021 recognizing for the first time Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Juneteenth became the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was adopted in 1983.
This year Juneteenth falls on the annual celebration of Father's Day which makes it even more special. BHMD wishes everyone the happiest of all Juneteenth’s.
