The adventures I had during my two weeks in northeast India are something I will never forget. In those two weeks, I explored the wonders of the states of Assam and Meghalaya and tried some of the most mouthwatering food I’ve ever had! This region expanded my view of what India is and I’m so excited to share it with you!
My time in Kaziranga National Park continued with my second game drive. I’d had my first game drive the previous afternoon and I was so psyched to go on another. I’d be visiting the central part of the park this time, so it was another opportunity to see new things!
I met back up with my friend and guide Gokul and set out. We passed by a beautiful tea garden on our way to a handicraft shop at the entrance to the central part of the park. I bought some piping hot chai for 10 rupees, or $0.14 U.S. Between the entry fee, road tolls, and camera fee, it cost me 1,250 rupees, or a little over $18 U.S.
I downed my chai, even though it was still super hot, and then we entered the park. We passed by the starting point of my elephant safari on our way deep into the central part of the park. We spotted a rhesus macaque, a deer, and several storks, as well as a Burmese python. There was also a Bengal monitor lizard hanging out nearby!
The road was super bumpy, but I was loving this game drive. We were barely in and we’d already seen so many animals! We passed fields of elephant grass before coming across some hog deer. We climbed to the top of a watch tower. From the top, we saw some Asian water buffalo. We heard an alarm while we were up there, and we thought maybe a tiger had caused it to go off, but it was a false alarm.
From there, we continued on and spotted huge Bengal monitor lizard basking in the sun on our way to the woodland area. The grassland reminded me a lot of Africa but the woodlands reminds me of the Amazon! We saw a huge anthill and some Assam roof turtles basking on a log in the river. I counted twelve of them!
When you come here, you should really do multiple treks into the park. I recommend doing at least 3: an elephant safari, a morning game drive, and an afternoon game drive. Different animals come out at different times of the day, so doing multiple game drives increases your chances of seeing more animals. Don’t forget your sunscreen!
Then we saw a beautiful black necked stork and a rhino feeding in the water, who we got really up close to! He was maybe 10 feet away from us at one point!
And with that, my second game drive was at an end. But now it was lunchtime!
I was graciously welcomed into a local’s home to have a jungle Assamese thali that contained 16 items! I tried a strong and bitter lemon and ginger juice before diving into the thali.
I went with the fish first, which was nice and crunchy. They were small, so I could eat them with no problem. The fish makes this thali different from northern and southern thalis in India.
I mixed the dal and rice with my hands and tried it next. It was super light and delicious. The bamboo shoots with fish was salty and contained lots of herbs. I loved the crunch of the bones! Next were the small, sautéed potatoes with onion, which were also incredible. The green vegetable was potent and a little spicy and reminded me of spinach.
The dal with elephant apple and white rice was so different and yummy. Next was a soft vegetable similar to a potato and some khar, which was basically creamy spinach. I mixed it with the rice, which was so delicious! The fried curry leaf was so crunchy and amazing. Everything was so fresh and tasty!
The chicken curry with potato was so flavorful, juicy, and tender. I loved it! The curry with the rice was unreal. It was some of the best food I’d ever had! I also loved the fried green banana, which was like yucca. The fish curry was next. I had to be careful of the bones but it was soft and tasty.
There was also a phenomenal spicy and creamy eggplant mash that was absolutely heavenly. I finished with some compressed rice with milk cream, jaggery, and molasses. It was super sweet and an amazing way to end my meal!
