This video will introduce you to the Chitwan National Park in southern Nepal and the different Safari Tours you can experience.
Deutsche Version: • Dschungel Safari im Ch...
The Chitwan National Park is located in the flat Terai region in southern Nepal. The tourist hub on the border of Chitwa National Park is the town of Sauraha, a six hour Bus ride from Kathmandu and a five hour bus ride from Pokhara. Sauraha has several good, clean hotels and nice restaurants, so staying there is really convenient.
The border between the Chitwan National Park and Sauraha is formed by the fast flowing Rapti River.
By the way: The Himalayan Mountains are more than 110 km (~65 miles) away from here, but you can still see the Annapurna range on a clear morning. It tends to get hazy during the day though, as subtropical climate is dominant in the Terai region. It's most humid during the monsoon season in summer (June to September) and less humid during winter.
Please be aware, that in fall, you will find grass up to 4 meters tall in many parts of the park, so spotting wildlife can be difficult.
The best time to travel to Chitwan is spring. Mainly February to April.
One of the best ways to experience the Chitwan National Park is a Hiking Safari or Walking Safari.
A dugout canoe will take you a few miles down Rapti river and drop you off in the jungle. Accompanied by two Guides, armed with large bamboo sticks, you will hike back towards Sauraha.
You'll cross dense forests and will probably encounter lots of animals really close up.
Please not that walking through the jungle all day can be pretty exhausting if it's hot.
A more relaxing way through Chitwan National Park is doing a Jeep or 4x4 Safari. The fact that you can cover much larger distances on board of your offroad vehicle lets you go much deeper into Chitwan National Park. Also, if you visit during fall season, standing on the jeep makes looking over the huge fields of high grass a lot easier. The Jeeps might be noisy, but we didn't recognize any animals being scared by it or behaving any shyer than during our jungle hike.
A third type of Safari is offered in Sauraha: The Elephant Safari. However we would very much like to discourage you from riding the Elephants! Not actually because of the Elephants have to carry you - which, frankly, is not too hard for them - but because of these Elephants have been tamed and enslaved, which is an extremely cruel process and causes a lot of physical and mental pain for these intelligent, gentle giants.
Please, do not ride Elephants!
If you would like to meet the local Elephants though, you can do so during their daily bathing time. You can find them in the morning playing in the Rapti River near Sauraha. For a small fee you can even join them in their routine. Be prepared to get soaked!
Among the animals you might spot on your Chitwan hiking Safari or Chitwan Jeep Safari might be: Bengal Tigers, Indian Elephants, Greater One-Horned Rhinos, Sloth Bears, Chital - Spotted Deer, other types of deer, Mugger Crocodiles, Gharial, Grey Langurs, other types of monkeys, Indian Boars, giant spiders and all kinds of other insects, fish owls, kingfishers and a huge variety of other large and/or colorful bird species.
Would you like to experience a Chitwan Safari in Chitwan National park? Or have you already done a Chitwan Safari Tour? Did you like it? What kind of animals did you spot? Did you come close to a Chitwan Rhino? Or even a Chitwan Tiger?
Please comment below and share your thoughts and experiences!

Hello Tridib, I believe it was about 3500 rupees (35$) per person. Prices vary depending on where you book. Also because pickup from the hotel is often included. But if you find a cheap offer take it. You'll probably end up in the same jeep with people who paid more.

We got there late in the day and most of the animals had already sheltered themselves from the heat, so we only came across flies and mosquitoes!
